2009 Dream Cup Challenge Draws More Than 100 Golfers
The SCC Foundation welcomed 29 teams of business leaders and College supporters to its 26th annual Dream Cup Challenge Golf Tournament, held April 13, 2009, at the Heathrow Country Club.
The 18-hole competition featured course contests, appearances from President Dr. E. Ann McGee and the Raiders' nationally ranked women's golf team, a barbecue dinner and an awards presentation. Tournament champions Chuck Baragona, Bog Collette, Rich Ruvel and Mitch Arnold of Heathrow Country Club took home the Dream Cup trophy.
"This tournament has become a signature event for Seminole Community College," said Matthew Hodge, SCC's Vice President for Institutional Advancement. "It was clear our guests had a great time, both with our golf team giving on-site pointers and Dr. McGee helping participants with their putting."
Before the tournament kicked off, Dr. McGee presented two Raider basketball players with Mack Blythe Outstanding Freshman of the Year Awards in recognition of their athletic and academic accomplishments. The recipients, who received $500 each, are:
- Kayo Taylor, a 6-foot-8-inch forward and a graduate of Oak Ridge High School in Orlando. Taylor averaged eight points and 12 rebounds per game during the 2008-09 season, earning All-Conference Honorable Mention and guiding the Raiders to a third-place Mid-Florida Conference finish. He maintains a 3.08 GPA and plans to become a high school teacher after finishing college.
- Eglah Griffin, a 5-foot-8-inch guard from Fort Myers. Griffin is a First-Team Mid-Florida Conference athlete and a former Florida Community College Activities Association (FCCAA) Women's Basketball Player of the Week. She averaged 16.8 points per game during the 2008-09 season and led the Lady Raiders with 68 three-point shots. She is active in the community and maintains a 3.8 GPA.
The Dream Cup Challenge Golf Tournament -- along with the 2009 Dream Gala celebration -- raised more than $200,000 for the College's programs and scholarships.
"We couldn't have this event each year without the support of the community," Hodge said. "We are truly thankful to everyone who came out and helped make the Dream Cup Challenge a success."
