Phlebotomy Technician
HSC 0003 Basic Healthcare Worker: 90 hours This 165-hour program, which meets Florida Department of Education requirements, is offered on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus. Students will attend 12 hours per week in the evenings. The program can be completed in approximately 15 weeks. HSC 1000, Introduction to Health Care, may substitute for HSC 0003 Basic Healthcare Worker with department approval. Students who finish the program will receive a Certificate of Program Completion. They also are eligible take a voluntary national certification exam offered by the National Health Career Association. Career Opportunities Graduates are prepared for entry level employment in medical laboratories, outpatient laboratories, hospitals, blood banks and clinics. Employment opportunities for phlebotomists are expected to be good as the demand for skilled laboratory personnel increases. The market is expected to increase 10 percent to 20 percent during the next decade. The fastest growth in this field is expected in independent medical laboratories because hospitals continue to send a greater amount of their lab work to outside facilities. The majority of employers in the healthcare industry require a background check. If the background check reveals any issues, employment may be denied. A high school diploma or equivalency is not required for program entry. Costs The program costs approximately $575. Federal financial aid is not available. However, Seminole State does offer fee waivers and scholarships for qualified students. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to qualify.
