5 Tips for a Great Semester

Tip 1: Identify your personal strengths and set career goals

The Career Development Center at Seminole State College has excellent online resources to help you understand what your career goal is and how to get there. The Career Link Online Career Center focuses on resources specific to finding your strengths and interests, then ties them to specific career options. Students in eLearning can use eAdvising to create a personalized educational plan and complete a degree audit to see how many classes they have left to complete their degrees.

Tip 2: It's about who you know

Stay in touch with your teachers and other students, and join professional associations that will support your goals and better prepare you for success. Remember, a team is much stronger than an individual. Sakai and email are great ways to open a line of communication with your instructors, and positive communication can lead to letters of recommendation and possible mentoring opportunities. Professional associations are terrific methods of finding internship opportunities and building a network within your specific career of interest.

Tip 3: Get help whenever you need it with online tutoring

The nature and format of online courses can make it easy for new students to fall behind. To assist students, the eLearning Department utilizes tutoring service called Smarthinking, which is available 24 hours a day and provides study materials in addition to its tutoring services for a variety of subjects.

Tip 4: Be ready: Know your deadlines, holds and objectives

Know your deadlines by reviewing the Academic Calendar and downloading "iCal" to integrate important dates into your personal calendar. Being prepared and proactive with incoming deadlines and due dates will prevent future distress and confusion. For a personalized check on your current status at Seminole State, we recommend logging into your MySeminoleState account and reviewing the "Holds" and "To Do" lists on the right-hand table in your Student Center. Here you can find out about any enrollment restrictions or unfinished steps for your financial aid.

Tip 5: Know your classes inside and out

Before taking an online course, take the "Is eLearning Right for Me?" quiz (below) to see if online classes are a good fit. Once you have selected a class, you can review the class notes to find out if you have to come on campus for orientation or specific dates. Even primarily online courses sometimes require campus visits for orientation, tests or other reasons. The class notes button is available when searching for courses in the MySeminoleState class search. Finally, when searching for courses, click the class syllabus and course materials buttons for required textbooks and class information.
