Creative Writing

The English Department offers a variety of stimulating programs, and its faculty members provide an encouraging environment for future writers, novelists and poets. Tuesday Voices, an open reading of original poetry, sponsored by the English Department and the Gwendolyn Brooks Writers' Association of Florida Inc., meets the fourth Tuesday of every month on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus, at local bookstores or at other venues.

For students, the English Department sponsors the Open Doors Short Story Competition, as well as the Stephen Caldwell Wright Poetry Awards, and applicants from across the country enter the Thomas Burnett Swann Poetry Competition. Winners are given a cash prize, and their selected poems are published in Revelry, a national publication sponsored by the Gwendolyn Brooks Writers' Association of Florida Inc. and Seminole State's English Department.
