Online Courses @ Seminole State

Seminole State College has a variety of online courses available.  These courses allow the student to complete course work via computer at home or at the office.

Online courses are designed to provide for interaction between you and your instructor, and between you and your fellow students. E-mail and online discussion boards will keep you connected, and many of the social dynamics of the traditional classroom will be encouraged. The focus will be on you, the learner, and your course may include some or all of the following components.

  • Online discussions via e-mail and bulletin board postings
  • World Wide Web links to information sources related the class
  • Online quizzes and surveys
  • Real-time chatting with the instructor and fellow students
  • Texts and/or workbooks to read and study
  • Online course content in addition to (or in place of) the textbook
  • On-campus activities such as orientation to the course and testing

 Online Course Requirements:

Access to a personal computer
  • A Pentium I processor or better is recommended. (If you do not have a computer at home, or if you have trouble with your system during the semester, you can come to the computer labs or the library on campus to complete your coursework.)
Internet access with an e-mail account
  • In order to take an online course, you will need to have a computer and software with which you can access the Internet. This means that your computer must either be on a network or have a modem. While there is no true requirement for the modem speed, you will enjoy the class (and surfing the Internet in general) with at least a 58.8 baud rate modem. Faster is better.  Most students find that high-speed cable or DSL internet connections are preferable.
  • Additionally, you will need the software for your modem to work and a Web browser for navigating the Internet. In order to access the Internet, you will have to have an Internet Service Provider (ISP). An ISP is a company to which you pay a monthly fee to give you access to the Internet. As a general guideline, unlimited access runs about $20.00 to $40.00 a month, depending on the speed of your connection (i.e. dial-up, Cable, or DSL).
  • The ISP will be able to assist you in getting the appropriate software for connection to the Internet as well as configuring the software.
Basic experience using Windows and the Internet
  • A basic familiarity with using a computer and "surfing" the Internet is important when taking a class in an online environment.

Remember! These specifications are minimal, and you'll get by with them. More sophisticated computer systems and faster Internet connection speeds are better!

Online/Campus Courses:

Online/campus courses combine online and on-campus modes of delivery.  These courses meet on-campus for approximately 25% of the time for face-to-face instruction, discussion and testing.  The other 75% of the course is conducted in an online environment.  The components and requirements for an online mixed-media course are the same as those for online courses.  Contact your instructor for more information on scheduled meeting times, dates and locations.
