Distance Learning Faculty Mentor Program

Our DL Faculty Mentoring program has changed! In an effort to make it more open and inclusive to the entire college community, we have made several recent program revisions. The most notable change is that there is no longer a stipend associated with mentoring. However, participation in the program can be used as professional development credit.

Many of you mentor your peers informally right now. Why not get some credit for what you are already doing? Please read the program overview below. There are links to the sign-up forms at the bottom of this message. If you have an interest, I encourage you to participate! We need both mentors and mentees, so please don't hesitate to sign up for either role!

Description

  • The DL mentor program, as opposed to other faculty mentoring programs on campus, focuses on the development of online, video, and technology enhanced courses and course materials. This includes online and video course development, as well as the development of online or multimedia components for campus based courses.
  • You do not have to be teaching or developing online courses to participate. However, there should be a clear emphasis on incorporating technology into your specified course or course modality, as well as discussing pedagogical issues and sharing strategies for teaching and learning at a distance.

Benefits of Participation

  • Both mentors and mentees will receive professional development credit for participation in the program. Professional development hours may be used to account for up to 80 out of the 180 hours required in a five year period.
  • Mentors will be recognized as a resource for their peers. They will have the opportunity to stretch and expand on their own skill set as they share their ideas and teaching strategies with other faculty.
  • Mentees will be able to draw on their mentors' experience, ask questions both technical and pedagogical, and have someone there to help them on a one-to-one basis as they work through the course development or enhancement process.
  • The DL office will be sponsoring several faculty mentor roundtable discussions and brown bag sessions throughout the term. These sessions will give you the opportunity to network with your peers and share ideas and insights on important issues in education. (The time spent attending these sessions counts toward the 80 hours of professional development credit referenced above.)

Time Commitment

  • The amount of time spent mentoring or being mentored is for each pair of faculty to determine. Ideally, each mentor/mentee pair should schedule meetings at regular intervals. For example, they might choose to set aside an hour once a week, or once every other week, to get together.
  • Mentors are required to attend one initial DL Mentor meeting per term. After that, both mentors and mentees are encouraged (but not required) to attend the informal roundtable discussions and brown bag sessions on various topics related to distance learning and technology in education.

Mentor Matching

  • Each DL Mentor will be matched with a faculty member requesting mentoring for that term.
  • Mentors and mentees will be matched according to the preferences they indicate on their sign-up forms (i.e. male/female, academic dept., similarities in course design, etc.).

If you would like to be a DL Mentor, please fill out this short online sign up form!

If you would like to be a mentee, please fill out the mentor matching request to be paired with a DL Mentor!

I hope that you will take the opportunity to participate in this program during the remainder of this term, and/or in future terms. If you have any questions, please contact Wilma Hodges (hodgesw@seminolestate.edu).
