Multicultural websites
The following are links to websites that focus on more than one racial or ethnic group, or on diversity issues in general.
- Bureau of the Census: Online U.S. Census data that can be searched by specific region, race or ethnicity, age and more.
- Center for Multilingual, Multicultural Research: Full text articles, facts and websites on minorities and language issues, compiled by the University of Southern California's Center for Multilingual, Multicultural Research.
- Chilly Climate: Articles written by Bernice Sandler addressing many issues, including discrimination, sexual harassment and chilly climate.
- Multicultural Media: An extensive online catalog of videos, music CDs and books on historic and contemporary ethnic music and dances from all over the world.
African-American websites
This list includes selected African-American Web resources that are useful for academic research and informational purposes. Only websites that are reflective of African-American realities were considered; sites that are exclusively African in origin or focus are only rarely included. The recommended websites listed below were evaluated for breadth, perceived authority, stability, usefulness and accuracy.
- African American Web Connection: A good selection of mostly popular Web pages on topics such as art, authors, history and other index sites, including annotated listings for online periodicals, resources for children and a directory of churches.
- Africana.com: A scholarly portal with news, articles, information and services for free online and subscription fees. Main channels include Worldview, Lifestyle, Fast Track, Heritage, Art Scene and Homefront. There are numerous advertisements for products, books, CD-ROMs and network services. The site includes music, book and movie reviews, as well as a search engine. According to the site, their mission is to gather together authoritative information on the African diaspora in an entertaining way.
- BlackVoices.com: Now called AOL Black Voices, this attractive portal offers chat clubs, member searches, Afrocentric greeting cards, member photos and other miscellaneous services and includes archived stories, as well as a search engine. Content is a bit buried on this site but covers the main topics of Black news today, careers, sports, entertainment, book reviews, cars and an events search. One unique and entertaining feature is BVTV, or brief streaming-video roving-reporter interviews of Chicagoans on politics, history and leisure topics.
Native American websites
This list includes selected Native American Web resources, which are useful for academic research and informational purposes. Only websites that are reflective of Native American realities were considered sites that are exclusively New Age or otherwise non-native in origin or focus are not included. Recommended websites listed below were evaluated for breadth, perceived authority, stability, usefulness and accuracy.
- Native American Legal Resources: A compilation of links to full-text documents such as relevant case law, constitutions of specific tribes, as well as nations, treaties and other resources. This site from the University of Oklahoma's Law Center also provides links to government agencies, such as the BIA, the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, the developing Native American Constitution and Law Digitization Project and more.
- Native American Sites: One of the best sources for locating websites developed by individual Native American nations and other native peoples, as well as native information on many topics. This site is by Lisa Mitten, a former bibliographer and librarian at the University of Pittsburgh, and it includes useful lists of video sources and media production companies, as well as sections on language and the issue of "mascots."
- Native Americans: American Studies: A short but useful listing of sites pertaining to Native American religions, spirituality and related traditions; this site is part of the larger Virtual Religion Index/American Studies religion site at Rutgers. Despite its brevity, it's one of the few resources that has a focus on Native American religions.
- NativeNet: "Dedicated to protecting and defending Mother Earth and the rights of indigenous peoples," NativeNet has long sponsored a number of well-known Internet discussion lists, such as Native-L, NAT-Lang, NAT-Chat and others, whose threads have been archived at this site. It also includes links organized by geography and topic.
- Teaching Indigenous Languages: A collection of full-text scholarly articles, bibliographies and information on the teaching and revitalizing of indigenous languages. This site by Jon Reyhner at Northern Arizona University includes teaching models, details on the status of various Native American languages and rationales for keeping endangered languages alive. A great amount of social and political information relevant to language maintenance is also included. Information on academic conferences and links to other relevant websites are also provided.
Asian-American websites
This list includes selected Asian-American Web resources that are useful for academic research and informational purposes. Only websites that are reflective of Asian-American realities were considered; sites that are exclusively Asian in origin or focus are only rarely included. The recommended websites listed below were evaluated for breadth, perceived authority, stability, usefulness and accuracy.
- Asian Pacific-American Politics: Sponsored by the American Political Science Association's section on race, ethnicity and politics, this site includes a brief bibliography of noteworthy books and selected links to Asian-American studies programs and centers, relevant associations and miscellaneous sites of interest.
- Hmong Net: A huge and well-organized collection of Hmong resources, news and information, including publications, human rights information, dictionaries, art and handicrafts, history, culture and much more.
- Little Saigon Net: Written in English and in Vietnamese, this site organizes information and Web links under categories such as community, media, entertainment and people. It includes links to downloadable fonts and VNI software, radio links, a bookstore and many other features.
- Southeast Asian Archive: Maintained by the UC Irvine Libraries, this site organizes library materials, guides, digital collections and Web links pertaining to Southeast Asians, including Cambodian, Hmong, Lao and Vietnamese resources.
- Voice of the Shuttle: Asian-American: This list of miscellaneous Asian-American Web links includes e-journals, research guides and bibliographies.
U.S. Hispanic websites
This list includes Chicano/Mexican-American, Puerto Rican and Cuban-American Web resources, as well as sites that pertain to Salvadorans, Dominicans, Colombians, Guatemalans and other Hispanic people residing in the U.S. Only websites that are reflective of U.S. Hispanic realities were considered; sites that are exclusively Hispanic-American in focus are not included. The recommended websites listed below were evaluated for breadth, perceived authority, stability, usefulness and accuracy.
- AfroCubaWeb: This is a full listing of news items and current events relevant to Afro-Cuban issues of all kinds, with a focus on the arts, music, religion, literature and folklore. It includes information on research trips to Cuba, visiting Cuban scholars, workshops, conferences and festivals. The site is written in English and includes a search engine.
- Biografias y Vidas: This website provides biographical information in Spanish on thousands of individuals worldwide, ranging from Aristotle to David Beckham; it offers good coverage of people from the Spanish-speaking world, including the U.S., and includes illustrations.
- HispanicBusiness.com: Formerly called HispanicBiz, this website now bills itself as HispanicBusiness.com, a large meta-site with a business focus. The site includes helpful links to U.S. and Hispanic-American financial news, job databases, demographic and business-related facts about U.S. Hispanics, resources and publications on technology, networking, education and community resources. It focuses generally on the U.S. Hispanic-American population at large and includes selected full-text articles from Hispanic Business Magazine. The site is written in English, with some links in Spanish and Portuguese, but has no search engine.
- Hispanic Network Magazine: A career- and employment-focused site that includes resources, such as Latino-related employment fairs, lists of relevant conferences and their dates, and other career information. It does not include online magazine articles, though subscription information is posted.
- Yahoo en Espanol: A Spanish-language version of Yahoo that focuses on the classification and retrieval of websites written in Spanish, with a special focus on Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Spain, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela.
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender websites
This list includes selected LGBT Web resources that are useful for academic research and informational purposes. Only websites that are relevant to LGBT research and informational needs were considered. The recommended websites listed below were evaluated for breadth, perceived authority, stability, usefulness and accuracy.
- Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD): The website of this well-known advocacy group provides national and local organization information; a news center with many articles and notices organized by geographical region; and descriptions of GLAAD projects, media releases and other helpful materials. The site includes a media search engine and many publications, some of which are full-text articles and are available online.
- National Consortium of Directors of LGBT Resources in Higher Education: This site provides useful links to research libraries with strong LGBT collections and archives; a good annotated list of online journals and e-zines; queer studies programs across the country; and useful syllabi, bibliographies and other resources.
- Oasis Journals: The website for this national coalition for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youths includes chat groups, news items, directories and many educational resources, such as facts, statistics, articles and other materials in support LGBT issues that can be used by teens in their schools and communities.
- Transgender Forum: This site includes resources, an information exchange and community support. Some of its resources are available by subscription only.
