College Developmental Course Information

What are College Developmental Courses?

  • College developmental courses are designed to prepare students to begin college-level course work by equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed at this level.
  • Students are placed in college developmental classes based on their scores on the Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (PERT) or another placement exam.
  • Students who score below the college level in reading, writing and/or mathematics are required to take developmental classes in the appropriate subject area.
    • This requirement applies to all associate and bachelor's degree programs as well as college-credit certificate programs.
    • Most career and technical certificate programs do not require preparatory classes.
  • Students must begin their developmental courses by the time they register for their 12th hour of college-credit course work.
  • Students must continue to enroll in developmental courses until all requirements are satisfactorily completed.
