College Preparatory Courses

What are college preparatory courses?

  • College preparatory courses are designed to prepare students to begin college-level course work with the skills and knowledge to successfully complete college-level classes.
  • Students are placed in the college preparatory classes based on Computerized Placement Test (CPT) scores or other placement test scores.
  • Students who score below college-level in the areas of reading, writing and/or mathematics are required to take preparatory classes.
  • This requirement applies to A.A., A.S., and A.A.S. degree programs.  Most college credit certificate and A.T.D. programs do not require preparatory classes.
  • Students must begin their preparatory courses by the time they have registered into the twelfth (12) hour of college credit course work.
  • Students must continuously enroll into preparatory courses until satisfactory completion.

What are the benefits of taking college preparatory courses?

Studies show that students who complete college preparatory classes are as successful, and often times more successful, in college-level courses than those who do not take preparatory classes.  While achieving college-level skills, students also become familiar with the college setting and various transition issues that often take months of adjustment.
