Florida Director Credential

Who is required to have the credential?

Legislation passed in Florida during the 1999 legislative session requires all childcare and education program directors and administrators to have the Florida Director Credential as part of the minimum licensing standards for all childcare centers.

The credential will be required for directors/administrators of childcare centers. For the purpose of the credential, the term "administrator" is used to describe the role of the primary person responsible for the day-to-day operation, supervision and administration of the center. A minimum of one person at each site must have the credential.

Foundational Level - Credential Requirements

Education requirements:

  • A high school diploma or GED;
  • 40 hours of state-mandated training;
  • A CDA or a completed "Education and Employment History Verification Form" (Form 5211); 
  • Successful completion of the Children with Special Needs Training Class; and
  • One course in the curriculum area of Overview of Childcare Center Management: EEC 1523 - Child Care Management.

Experience requirements:

  • No experience is required for a level one credential.
  • Level two requirements:
    • At least one year of experience in on-site childcare and program administration; and
    • Candidates must meet all the core requirements listed above.

Advanced Level

Advanced level is optional.

Education requirements:

  • All the above foundational-level requirements; 
  • Successful completion of Financial and Legal Issues in Childcare (EEC2527); and
  • Successful completion of Organizational Leadership and Management (EEC2521).

Experience requirements:

Seminole State is the only facility providing this training for center directors in Seminole County. We also allow directors and future directors to take the credential courses while obtaining their CDA or course requirements for Form 5211. Please see the course schedule for course offerings. Online courses for the Director Credential are coming soon. Class space is limited for both online and on-site courses.
