Mission

Seminole State College's Early Childhood Education Department strives to serve the early childhood community by providing a high-quality learning environment for students enrolled in its Early Childhood Education Program.

The early childhood curriculum at Seminole State is guided by a conceptual framework, which states:

"The foundation of our program and our work with students is built on the construct that children need opportunities to initiate activities and follow their interests through play. We strive to instruct our students to teach with knowledge and purpose in order for children to acquire the skills needed to succeed in school. We teach our students to be intentional teachers (Epstein, 2007), with emphasis placed on child-centered play and purposeful interaction. We want our students to develop a fundamental respect for children's curiosity and eagerness to learn, an appreciation for their culture and their families, and an understanding that each child is an individual."

Seminole State's Early Childhood Education Program is committed to delivering a curriculum tied to development and research-based ideas, which are proven to be best practices in the field. Faculty members are committed to serving as role models for students, emphasizing the core values of respect, integrity, excellence, knowledge and academic freedom to prepare students for professional success.

Our Associate in Science degree program in Early Childhood Education has recently been awarded seven-year accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
