Student Support Services

Academic Advising and Counseling

Counselors, educational advisers and student services specialists play an integral part in empowering students to achieve success by actively supporting their educational goals from admission to the completion of their program. The following services are offered on all Seminole State campuses and many are also available at www.seminolestate.edu/counseling:

  • Academic Advising: Includes the interpretation of test results and information on program requirements, assistance with course selection, explanation of college support systems and assistance with career planning, study skills, educational planning and graduation audits.
  • Educational Planning: Includes the development of an individualized term-by-term plan for all courses that must be completed to receive a specific degree or certificate.
  • Career Planning: Includes clarifying career interests and goals, selecting a major and preparing to transfer to four-year colleges and universities. Students are encouraged to make a decision early regarding their major to avoid making mistakes in selecting courses.
  • Short-Term Mental Health Counseling: Available to assist students when the stress of personal problems hinders academic achievement; assistance can be provided for such personal issues as anxiety, depression, interpersonal relationships, stress, grief, self-esteem and more. Students may schedule individual appointments. Counseling contacts are kept confidential. Students who need long-term counseling will be referred to a community agency.

Faculty members are encouraged to refer students who may need these services to the counseling staff. Workshops on study-skills techniques, test anxiety and learning styles are also available to assist students in developing the required skills to be successful in completing their courses.
