V.C., Combined CJSTC Law Enforcement and Corrections Basic Dual Certification

The Combined CJSTC Law Enforcement and Corrections Basic Dual Certification program will be terminated effective Spring 2013. Students interested in law enforcement or corrections should pursue the Florida CMS Law Enforcement Basic Recruit Program or the Traditional Correctional Basic Recruit Training Program.

This program provides students the knowledge and practical skills required by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC) to be employed as a dual certified police and corrections officer. Completion of this program is required to be eligible to take the State Officer Certification Examination. Admission requirements and selection criteria may be obtained from the College's Admissions Office.

This is a limited-access program. Candidates must:

  • Apply and be accepted to Seminole State College;
  • Provide an official transcript(s) indicating successful completion of a standard high school diploma or equivalent;
  • Be a least 19 years of age;
  • Be a U.S. citizen;
  • Have no felony or misdemeanor convictions (no contest, adjudication withheld, or guilty plea), involving perjury, false statements or moral turpitude;
  • Complete the CJ-BAT test with a score of at least 79 percent; and
  • Complete the Criminal Justice Institute Application Process.

In this course students learn the operation of a correctional facility. Safety and health care for inmates, inmate control procedures, property and classifications procedures are learned along with bonding and release regulations. Inmate disciplinary functions are taught according to state rules and regulations. Accountability and bookkeeping procedures, patrol techniques and hazards to the officer are also covered. This course introduces the CMS law enforcement officer to competencies needed to qualify as a traditional corrections officer. This course covers the criminal justice communications and interpersonal skills necessary for a CMS law enforcement officer. This includes interactions with youth offenders and the mentally or physically handicapped along with crisis intervention techniques and suicide prevention training. It also includes the history and philosophy of corrections; prisoner and correction officer rights and responsibilities; ethical and professional behavior; classification of offenses; legal terms and courtroom procedures and the use of force, search and seizure concepts.
