SCC reliever Jonathan Holt pitched 1.2 innings to earn his fourth win of the season. Holt (4-1, 2.96 ERA) did not allow any earned runs and induced a game-saving double play to end an eighth inning FCCJ scoring threat.
FCCJ jumped out to an early 2-0 lead scoring two runs via two first-inning SCC fielding gaffes. The Stars lead would stretch to 4-0 before the Raiders cut the lead in half with a two-run home half of the fifth inning highlighted by Ryan Richardson's leadoff double.
After adding two more runs in the sixth inning FCCJ seemed poised to break the 4-4 tie in the seventh inning as the Stars posted runners on first and second with no outs of reliever Jimmy Moser.
The Raiders' head coach went to the bullpen and summoned Michael Jarry who promptly bare-handed a bunt to force a runner out at third before striking out the next batter and getting a groundout to end the inning.
When FCCJ went ahead and with a run in the eight of the inning and seemed on the verge of tacking on several more with runners on second and third with one out, Nicholson called for Holt to issue an intentional walk to load the bases. The plan worked perfectly as the next batter tapped the ball to shortstop Adam Younger for an almost tailor made 6-4-3 double play.
Trailing by one run in the bottom of the eight inning it took one swing for designated hitter Louis Ullrich to put SCC back in the ball game sending an 0-1 pitch of FCCJ reliever Jason Hiers over the left field wall to knot the game back up at 5-5. The home run was a career-high fourth long ball for the Longwood University transfer.
With no one out and runners on second and third, SCC could ill afford to surrender another run, so with the infield drawn in, Monell made a basket catch over his shoulders on a soft fly ball that led him right back to the third base bag ahead of the retreating runner for a miraculous double play. On the very next play FCCJ drove in a dagger go-ahead run that seemingly deflated the Raiders momentum swing.
Needing to head back on the comeback trail once again, Tyler Ackley smacked a one out single to keep hope alive. Monell stepped to the plate next and drove a 3-2 pitch over the center fielders head for a double that barely managed to score Ackley from first base to tie the game 6-6 with one out. FCCJ attempted to duplicate the Raider's strategy by intentionally walking John Armenio, but successive wild pitches from Mike Trouille completed SCC's dramatic victory.
With the win, the Raiders improved to 17-0 when scoring at least six runs, 7-2 in one run ball games and 23-6 when out-hitting its opponent.
Ackley finished the day 3-for-5, to raise his average to .408. Melbourne native Steven Kellum continued his torrid conference hitting increasing his Mid-Florida Conference batting average to .444 (16-for-36) and sports a .535 OBP.
The Raiders' next game is Friday Mar. 31, at Lake City Community College (24-17, 7-6 MFC). Bo O'Dell (3-2, 2.54 ERA) is slated to go for SCC. First pitch at Raider fielded is set for 3 p.m.
