Seminole State’s Fine Arts Gallery will feature Florida artists who work in an array of media, including photography, painting and metal. Bob Michaels, who will open the gallery season, often photographs people from other cultures. His latest series, “Cuba — people,” was created from nine trips to Cuba between 2009 and 2011. It gives viewers a poignant glimpse into the lives of what he terms “everyday Cuban people.” Other artists featured this season are Michael Augustine Hahn, Paul Martrildonno and Ken Austin. The Annual Fine Arts Faculty Exhibit in November-December and the Juried Student Art Exhibit in April will give the community an opportunity to explore works by longtime professional artists and to discover new talent. The College's Fine Arts Gallery (building G on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus) is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and also during music and theater performances. TheaterThe Fine Arts Theater’s season will encompass the poignancy of “The Glass Menagerie,” the decadence of “Cabaret” and the drama of August Wilson’s “King Hedley II,” the ninth in playwright August Wilson’s 10-play “Pittsburgh Cycle” chronicling the African-American experience in the 20th century. The final production of the season, Sarah Ruhl’s adaptation of Eurydice, will offer a contemporary look at a Greek classic. Consider becoming a season subscriber! MusicThis season will highlight Seminole State’s music faculty with a series of recitals featuring woodwinds, cello, guitar and piano. The first recital is Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 7:30 p.m.

Student recitals also will feature prominently on the schedule this year, with two in October, two in November, three in March and one in April. The ArtsMatters Fine Arts Forum, scheduled for September, October, February and March, will cover a range of topics, including Irish and Caribbean music, success in today’s music industry, and a demonstration of the amadinda, a primitive xylophone-like instrument from Uganda. New to the Music Department’s program are Seminole State Music Days, most of which will take place on Saturdays. Students from area middle schools, high schools and colleges will perform on their instruments, attend workshops and view performances by clinicians and fellow students. The public is invited to attend all sessions. This year’s Encore! Concert Series highlights include “Sounds of the Universe 2.0,” a joint presentation with the Seminole State Planetarium; and Vox Audio, the internationally renowned a cappella group that blends humor and amazing vocals for a unique theatrical experience. Other OpportunitiesThe Planetarium at Seminole State College of Florida offers live, interactive shows and full-dome video presentations that are unlike any other planetarium show in Central Florida. From traditional star displays and cultural shows that detail the importance of astronomy around the world, to feature presentations that whisk you through the depths of outer space, the planetarium has something for curious stargazers of all ages. Tuesday Voices, an open-mic poetry reading series, is sponsored by the Seminole State English Department and the Gwendolyn Brooks Writers' Association of Florida Inc. The series provides a forum for poets — beginning and accomplished — to gather with lovers of poetry to share their works. The readings are free and open to the public, and everyone in attendance is invited to read an original poem or a favorite poem by another author.
