Total Immersion of English Study Strategies (TIES)

Into the Professional, Community and Home Lives of ESOL Students

TIES (Total Immersion of English Study Strategies) is a component of "Project Literacy Challenge," a Seminole State College project funded in part by a USDOE English Literacy and Civics Education grant.

Total Immersion of English Strategies has as its foremost intent the infusion of English study strategies into as many phases of ESOL students' lives as possible. Its purpose is to enhance the potential of ESOL students to learn about and acquire the English language in as expeditious yet effective manner as possible. The methodology involved is based on research indicating that relativity to personal and professional lives provides the most appropriate platform for learning by ESOL students. One of the major goals of the project is to assist students in becoming their own "teachers" outside the classroom.

The purpose of the TIES lesson plans is to help students help themselves in the development of English language skills outside the classroom in situations which include but are not limited to the navigation of governmental, educational, workplace, financial and health care systems. Through use of authentic materials and abundant literacy resources in the surrounding environment as well as the classroom, the students enhance their acquisition of English in reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.

TIES is a project sponsored in part by the USDOE English Literacy and Civics Education "Project Literacy Challenge" 2003-2005.
