English Language Institute

Seminole State College's English Language Institute is an intensive language program for international students whose native language is not English. The non-credit program focuses on improving English skills and preparing students to continue their education at the college level. Seminole State is located in Central Florida near Orlando.

We offer:

• Excellent English classes for speakers of other languages
• Modern computer lab with special ESL software for adults
• Qualified instructors specializing in teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages
• Friendly, academic atmosphere
• Levels ranging from beginning to advanced
• 1 level = approximately 15 weeks
• 18-20 hours of instruction per week
• Currently, students at the beginning levels of English Language Institute (Fundamentals I and Fundamentals II) study with resident adult education ESOL students for approximately 15 of the total hours in their program. During this time, strategies for learning include the study of language needed for life skills and work skills in the United States. The remaining hours are focused on academic communication skills.
• Currently, Intermediate and Advanced levels study 12 hours each week in community college English for Academic Purposes with EAP students. In addition, they study selected topics that vary from term to term such as American language and culture and vocabulary. At least three hours are spent in language lab each week.

Cost

The English Language Institute costs $2,800 U.S. dollars per level (for one complete 15-week term). Payment for the complete term is required in full at the time of registration. Price is subject to change.

Other Information

You are responsible for providing your housing while at the Language Institute. Seminole State College does not offer housing provisions for its students. There are free public services available to help you find rental apartments in the area. A two-bedroom apartment generally costs between $500 and $700 per month.

Public transportation in the Orlando area is very limited. If you do not own a car, you should inquire about bus routes to the College and other service areas before selecting housing. It is necessary that you provide your own means of transportation. A used automobile generally costs between $2,500 and $4,000. In the state of Florida, you are required to purchase automobile insurance.

Admissions

You are eligible for admission* to the English Language Institute if you:

• Are 16 years of age or older
• Can obtain a student visa (F-1)

*Acceptance to the Language Institute is not an admission to college-credit classes at Seminole State College.
