EAP Guidelines

Guidelines for Student Testing

Resident or international students whose native language is not English, or who studied part of their high school in a language other than English, or who studied ESOL or ESL in high school:

  • Take the PERT and provide a writing sample.
  • If PERT scores are a minimum of 104 Reading and 99 Writing, the ELS and English departments may determine where students should be placed based on PERT scores and writing assessment. Evaluators may, however, request that students also take the Level of English Proficiency (LOEP) test dependent upon demonstrated writing proficiency.
  • If scores are below 104/99, students take the LOEP test. Based on LOEP and writing assessment scores, the ELS and English departments determine where the students should be placed.

International students whose native language is English, who are from countries where English is the official language, and who studied high school only in English without ESOL or ESL:

  • Take the PERT.
  • If PERT scores are a minimum of 104/99, they are placed into ENC1101.
  • If scores are below 104/99, they take the Level of English Proficiency (LOEP) test and provide a writing sample. The ELS and English departments determine where they should be placed based on LOEP scores and demonstrated writing proficiency.
