Presidential Report: November 28, 2011

Welcome

A warm Seminole State College "welcome" to our new Trustee, Jeffrey Bauer.  Mr. Bauer received his Associate in Arts degree from Seminole State College - Go State - and his bachelor's degree from Stetson. He is an insurance agent with the Admin Insurance Group and is also a consultant with BMJ Consulting. He serves on the Seminole County Charter Review Commission and is the former Chief of Staff for the Sanford City Commission. Mr. Bauer's term runs until May 31, 2014. We now have our full Board of Trustees -- the first time in two years!

Kudos

Trustee Alex Setzer will receive his MBA this weekend from The University of Florida. Congratulations Alex!

Christopher Posey, Vice President for Scholarship for our Phi Theta Kappa chapter, has been selected as a 2011 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar. This scholarship program is available to currently enrolled community college PTK members and is a $1000 award.  Christopher competed with 1,154 students throughout the United States. Congratulations, Christopher!

Many congratulations to our Paramedic graduates for achieving a 100 percent pass rate on the Paramedic Exam. Congratulations also to Program Manager Angel Nater, Professor Sharon "Cricket" Moore and the rest of the Paramedic team!

Congratulations to Mark Carey, Program Director for our Respiratory Care Program, and his team! The Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) has notified us that our program has met or exceeded all thresholds for success on each of the required outcome measures for accreditation.

Congratulations to our College Relations and Marketing Department for the awards they received at the recent Association of Florida Colleges (AFC) Convention.

  • First Place for "College Promotional Video"
  • Second Place for "High School Senior Mailing"
  • Second Place for "News Story/Pitch" for our story on Hurricane-Resistant Construction Demo
  • Second Place for "Fine Arts Brochure"

Additionally, they won a gold, silver and bronze regional award from the National Council for Marketing & Public Relations (District 7) in Atlanta on Oct. 18. These awards will now be entered into the 2011 national competition.

Congratulations to Molly Dykes for her recognition at the AFC Convention. Molly was the recipient of the "2011 Pat Barriteau Unsung Hero Award."  This award recognizes a member of the AFC Career and Professional Employees Commission for their strong commitment and tireless, behind-the-scenes efforts at the local chapter and/or commission level. Molly also received the "Region III Unsung Hero Award," which recognizes a model employee who has exceeded the expectations of his/her job duties. Molly was also elected as the Career and Professional Employee Commission Chair-Elect for 2012. Molly, we are very proud of you! Thank you for your dedication to the College and to the Association of Florida Colleges!

Seminole State was also awarded the Silver Exemplary Practice Award and the Gold Exemplary Practice Award for our Diversity Matters.  Many congratulations to Dr. Yolanda Williams and Mr. Christopher Butts for their leadership in our diversity engagement arena!

Great news from our Grants office. Dr. Maya Byfield, Professor of Biological Science, and Seminole State College were selected last week to participate as a full partner in the national Community College Undergraduate Research Initiative (CCURI) funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Transforming Undergraduate Education (TUES) in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) grant program. We are 1 of only 19 colleges selected by Finger Lakes Community College out of 68 community college applicants from across the country. Participation in this grant will provide Seminole State with access to professional networking and resources designed to explore strategies to provide undergraduate research experiences for our students. It will also increase Dr. Byfield's and Seminole State's national visibility, increasing our competitive position as we continue to work with Dr. Byfield in developing her own grant submission to the TUES grant program this spring. Congratulations to all!

Many thanks to Cindy Drago for attending our first annual Veterans Day Celebration. We had approximately 30 elected officials and 160 participants at a ceremony that was planned entirely by our student veterans.

Graduation

Cheryl has sent you the Graduation schedule through next Spring. Please let us know which ones you would like to attend, but we particularly hope to see you at Commencement on Friday, Dec. 9.

New Trustee Orientation

Now that our Board is complete, we will hold our New Trustee Orientation on Dec. 13 in the afternoon with a dinner that evening with you and your spouses. An agenda will follow.

Meeting Date Changes

Later in the meeting, we will ask you about canceling the December meeting and changing the date of the January meeting from Jan. 16 to Jan. 23 since Jan. 16 is a national holiday. We will hold the January meeting on the Oviedo Campus.
