Presidential Report: Nov. 15, 2010

Congratulations

Congratulations to Cindy Drago, who is the new Oviedo City Councilwoman. Cindy will be officially sworn in tonight (Nov. 15) at 6:30 p.m. at Oviedo City Hall. Congratulations and thanks to Scott Howat for running in the 2nd Annual Raider Run yesterday and finishing 3rd in his age group!

New Hire

Please join me in welcoming my new Office Manager, Cheryl Daley. Cheryl comes to us from New Boston Fund, Inc., in Massachusetts, where she was the Assistant to the CEO. Prior to New Boston Fund, Cheryl served as the Executive Assistant/Office Manager to one CEO over a 14-year period through four different companies. She was also the Executive Assistant to the Chairman of Fidelity Investments. In addition to her executive support positions, Cheryl has been an adjunct faculty member at North Shore Community College and Gibbs College, teaching Office Procedures and Management, Professional Development and Career Development. I am sure Cheryl will be a great addition to the President’s Office.

As you know, this is Linda's last Board meeting. Thank you to the Trustees for hosting a luncheon in Linda's honor today. There will be several other events as Linda wraps up 30 years of dedicated service to our students, faculty and staff.

Thank You

Many thanks to Cindy Drago for agreeing to attend the FACC Trustee meeting in Jacksonville on Nov. 18. With the newly-elected governor, we expect that Trustee participation as we lobby for state college funding will be crucial.

Kudos

At the Florida Nursing Student Association Convention, our nurses won the "Most Creative Breakthrough to Nursing" award for their "Discover Nursing" Girl Scout merit badge event. Scouts from various Citrus Council troops gathered at the Altamonte Springs Campus to learn what nursing was all about and to train on the simulators. This unique approach to educating youngsters about nursing careers was also written up in Imprint, the National Student Nurses journal. Congratulations to our nursing students and faculty on this achievement!

Last year's Scribe staff received six awards from the Florida Community College Press Association Newspaper Competition for 2010. The winners were:

  • Second Place, News Photo, Mike Loory
  • Third Place, Sports Photo, Mike Martin
  • Third Place, News Story, Cindy Mejia
  • Third Place (tie), In-Depth Reporting, Joseph Armiger
  • Third Place (tie), Feature Story, Allison Olcsvay. Allison has returned this year as The Scribe editor.

Dr. Marcia Roman, Interim Vice President of Student Success Services, and Dr. Laura Ross, Dean of Arts & Sciences, presented "Assessing Student Learning in Community College Honors Programs Using the CCCSE Course Feedback Form" during the National Collegiate Honors Council in Kansas City, Mo. The presentation was based on an article they had published in the Fall 2009 Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council. Congratulations, Marcia and Laura!

Congratulations to Chrishawn Speller, Professor of English, for successfully defending her dissertation and receiving her Ph.D. in Women's Literature from Florida State University.

Laura Dickinson, Professor of Speech, participated in a panel presentation at the Florida Community Association Conference. Laura's presentation had the highest attendance, and Laura was named the Florida Communication Association Teacher of the Year. Congratulations, Laura!

Neiman Marcus Event

On Wednesday, Dec. 1, Neiman Marcus and Seminole State's Interior Design Department would like to invite you to breakfast and an interior design presentation featuring "Enchantments for Holiday Lifestyles." Seminole State students are designing tablescapes featuring Neiman Marcus products. Proceeds will benefit student scholarships at Seminole State. The program will take place from 8:30-10 a.m. Tickets are $50, and seating is limited. Please let Cheryl or Linda know if you plan to attend by Nov. 23.

Joint Board Meeting with SCPS

This Board had mentioned having a joint meeting with the Seminole County Public Schools Board. With the recent elections, it might be good to hold this in February. I would like your thoughts and permission to proceed with the planning.

Graduations and Events

  • The Foundation holiday party is scheduled for Dec. 8, from 6:30-9 p.m., at Denny Bowman's home.
  • The Fire Science/Paramedic graduation ceremony is scheduled for Dec. 9, at 7 p.m., in the Fine Arts Concert Hall (30 minutes before the GED graduation).
  • The GED graduation ceremony is scheduled for Dec. 9, at 7:30 p.m., in the Gymnasium.
  • Commencement will take place on Dec. 10, at 8 p.m. It will be preceded by a graduation dinner at 6:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room with our Distinguished Alumni and guest speaker, Sabrina O'Bryan, Seminole County's Assistant County Manager.
  • The Law Enforcement/Corrections/Crossover graduation ceremony is scheduled for Dec. 14, at 7 p.m., in the Gymnasium.

Board Meetings

The December Board meeting is scheduled for Dec. 20. However, it can be cancelled if the Board so desires. Also, the January meeting is currently scheduled for our holiday on Martin Luther King's Birthday. Would the Board like to change the Jan. 17 meeting to Jan. 24? A formal vote is needed.

Seminole Delegation Meeting

There will be a Delegation Hearing on Dec. 15, from 6-9 p.m., at the County Commission Chambers, 1101 E. First Street in Sanford.
