Presidential Report: June 21, 2010Legislative Sessions ResultsMany thanks to each of our Trustees for their advocacy on our behalf during this past Legislative Session. Three weeks ago, we were facing the Governor's potential veto of our $10,250,000 for the Altamonte property. The first phone call that Friday was from former Trustee, Chris Dorworth, telling me that the project was going to be vetoed. Thanks to the lobbying efforts of our Trustees and former Trustee Dorworth - and the good work during the entire Session by Don Payton - after 5 hours of phone calls, we survived the veto process and will now have an additional $10,250,000 to put toward the purchase of the 27 acres, 3 buildings and 1300 parking spaces adjacent to the Altamonte Campus. Thank you! Nursing GraduationTonight is a very special evening for Seminole State. We will be holding our Nurses Candlelight Pinning Ceremony, certifying the graduation of our nursing students for the largest class ever - 191 graduates. Many congratulations to our Nursing students and faculty on this accomplishment! Faculty and Staff AchievementsInterim VP of Student Success Services, Dr. Marcia Roman, and her colleagues, Rosemarye T. Taylor and Debbie Hahs-Vaughn, co-authored the article "The Retention Index of the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE): How Meaningful Is It?" The article was published in the May 2010 issue of the juried publication Community College Journal of Research and Practice. Congratulations Marcia, Rosemarye and Debbie! Many congratulations to Ashley Maddox, a Seminole State graduate who is now an Educational Advisor at the Oviedo Campus, on the completion of her Masters of Arts degree in Applied Sociology from UCF. Ashley has certainly come a long way from her days in our Student Leadership Institute. Program RecertificationIn November 2009, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Criminal Justice Professionalism Program conducted a recertification audit of Seminole State's Criminal Justice Training Center. The inspection determined our program's ability to continue to deliver criminal justice training in all disciplines of Law Enforcement, Corrections and Correctional Probation. We passed with flying colors and have been approved by as a Certified Type A Criminal Justice Training Center. Congratulations to Director Billy Lee and his staff on this achievement! AthleticsMany congratulations to Golf Coach Christa Teno and our Lady Raiders on finishing in Sixth Place during the NJCAA competition. Also, many congratulations to Fabys Barreto who was named to an Honorable Mention position on the Women's Golf All-American Team of the NJCAA. July Board MeetingWith the business that the Board will be conducting today, it appears that we can cancel the July 19th meeting. Also, Scott Howat had mentioned that he would like the Board to consider holding at least one meeting a year at each of our primary sites. In this way, the Board will get to visit each of our sites and it will also open attendance to people who wouldn't normally have the opportunity to attend a Board meeting. We need a formal vote to officially cancel the meeting and move the meetings to different sites. Board Action: Mr. Howat moved to change the date and location of the August meeting to Monday, August 23, at 3:30 p.m., at the Oviedo Campus. He also moved to conduct one meeting per year at the Altamonte Campus, the Heathrow Center and the Oviedo Campus. Mr. Gregg seconded the motion and the Board voted unanimously in the affirmative. Motion carried. |
