Presidential Report February 22, 2010

Thank You!

Many thanks to Cindy Drago, Chick Gregg and Scott Howat for attending the 26th Annual Dream Gala on Saturday night.  What fun!!!

Faculty Success

Nursing professor, Jane Muszynski, was selected for the National Council of State Board of Nursing (NCSBN) NCLEX examination item development panel. Developing examination items is a key component in maintaining high quality exams for nursing graduates and her appointment had to be approved by the Florida Board of Nursing.  Congratulations, Jane!

Student Successes

Seminole State Brain Bowl students finished FIRST in the FCCAA Regional Brain Bowl competition.  The team was well-prepared by professor Jeri Rogers and  averaged close to 500 points per game; with two (2) All Stars out of five (5).  This win qualifies the team to compete in the FCCAA State Brain Bowl Competition in Melbourne next month.  Congratulations to students Kat Graff, Rojay Gordon, Tom Kunzen, and Joe Russell!  Special thanks to Jeri Rogers for her hard work preparing and coaching the team for the competitions and for staging the competition.  In addition, many thanks to Lisa Valentino, Dee Boyette, and Bonnie Tensen for their support as judges!

Seminole State's nursing students once again achieved outstanding scores on the NCLEX exam.  For the last quarter of 2009, our RN students scored 95.45% and 93.38%.  This compares to the State average of 88.41% and the national average of 88.42%.  Our Practical nursing student scored 100% and 95% for the year with the PN state average at 82.35% and the national average at 85.37%.  Congratulations to our students, Cheryl Cicotti, Director of Nursing, and the nursing instructors!

On November 19th, the Girl Scouts of Citrus Council got a special treat when several nursing students from Seminole State College assisted them in earning their "Discover Nursing" badge.  Danielle Abukhalaf, Seminole State Student Nurses' Association President, and freshman, Dana Shawcross wrote an article about the Girl Scout event and submitted it to the Nurses' Association Associate Degree Nursing Association.  The Association will publish the article in the national student nurses magazine next month which goes out to over 50,000 student nurses throughout the United States.

Congratulations to faculty advisors, Marguerite Abel and Sheron Rowe, who helped make the Student Nursing Association such a powerful organization, and congratulations to students, Danielle Abukhalaf and Dana Shawcross!

Last Friday, Seminole State hosted the Regional Competition for Phi Beta Lambda.  While we don't have the results yet, we know that Seminole State students always do very well!!!  Many congratulations to our Phi Beta Lambda students, advisors, staff and faculty.  Particular thanks go to Sherry Jenkins, Phi Beta Lambda advisor, for all of her efforts in organizing the event!
