Presidential Report January 25, 2010Thank YouMany thanks to Cindy Drago for attending the Oviedo/Winter Springs State of the Cities Luncheon at Tuscawilla Country Club last Thursday. Heritage JubileeThis year's Heritage Jubilee was an amazing celebration of African American achievement which was attended by more than 350 from our community! I would like to thank Dr. Annye Refoe, the African American Cultural Forum and the Black Faculty & Staff of Seminole State College for coordinating such a great evening which featured Norm Lewis, our student from over 25 years ago, who performs on Broadway. Norm treated the audience to a truly inspirational evening where he made you feel like he was performing for you alone. Thank you, Dr. Refoe, and all who were involved in planning this event! Physical Therapy Program AccreditationSeminole State's Physical Therapy Education Program received a continuance of accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), effective October 28, 2009. Congratulations to Dr. Carol Clayton, Program Manager; Dr. Nelda Malm, Department Chair; and Dean Angela Kersenbrock! Employee SuccessesLenny Portelli, Department Chair for Information Technology/Networking, was a presenter at Florida's Society of Information Management. He spoke on "Attracting and Keeping the Next Generation Workforce." Congratulations, Lenny! The Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) has selected the Foundation's faculty and staff Blue & Gold Campaign for an award in the category of Educational Fundraising Projects. The Foundation will be honored on February 23rd in Tampa. Relatively few community college programs are selected by CASE, so congratulations are in order for the Foundation and all involved in the Blue and Gold Campaign! FACC AwardsSeminole State received the 2009 Gold Chapter of the Year Award from the Florida Association of Community Colleges at the 2009 FACC Annual Convention. The award is given in recognition of exemplary service to FACC and The Florida College System. Congratulations to the 2009 FACC Officers: Professor Vanetta Felix-Greer, President; Molly Dykes, President-Elect; Vernita Redmond, Treasurer; Sarah Ballard, Secretary; Elizabeth Velazquez, Membership Chair; Tony Callaghan, Vice President; and Lee Patrizzi, Historian. The Student Services Commission, chaired by Jeff Fortunato, Dean of Students at the Altamonte Springs Campus, won "Commission of the Year" for the third straight year. Congratulations, Jeff! Bachelor's Degree UpdateAs you know, we have started our first Bachelor's Degree program in Interior Design. We accepted 44 students from the more than 100 who applied. And, in conjunction with UCF, I think you will agree that the new Partnership Center is amazing. Thank you for arriving early this afternoon for a tour. The official dedication has been scheduled for March 26th in the morning. Public Safety UpdateSeminole State's Emergency Management Training students have been asked to participate in Seminole County's School Bus Hostage exercise which will take place at the Seminole County Public School bus compound on January 28th. The exercise will serve to train Seminole County's first responders in the event of an actual school bus hostage situation. The EMT students will pose as mock patients during the exercise. Dream GalaThe Dream Gala will be held on Saturday, February 20, at 5:30 p.m., at the Lake Mary Marriott. I hope that all of you will attend. Toxic Audio will provide the entertainment this year and we have already sold 36 tables. Not an easy task in this economy. The proceeds will be used for scholarships for needy students. Digital Media Banner Center GrantAs you know, we were designated as the Digital Media Banner Center for the State of Florida. Working in conjunction with Workforce Florida, our team has tried to make this grant a viable one for all concerned. Unfortunately, given the contract provisions specified by Workforce Florida and the job market challenges in this economic climate, we have declined to go forward with the third year of the contract. We will still continue to pursue joint grants with Workforce Florida and will still offer this curriculum, which will receive more local support from agencies like Workforce Central Florida. Calendar of EventsLinda has provided you an updated Calendar of Events for your planning purposes. Legislative SummaryDon Payton is settled in Tallahassee and attending Committee meetings in preparation for the 2010 Legislative Session. Many thanks to each of you for making the time to travel to Tallahassee and lobby on our behalf with Trustees from around the State on February 2 and 3. Board Workshop with School BoardAt your request, I contacted Dr. Vogel to determine if a February date would be possible for a joint workshop with our two Boards. Dr. Vogel has indicated that perhaps a Spring or Summer date would be better once we have navigated our way through the Legislative Session. If there are no objections, that is the direction that I will pursue. New College LogoWe are excited to move forward with implementing the "Shield" concept for the College logo that you approved at the November 16th meeting. At your place, you will find a copy of the "Shield" icon in a 3-line, 2-line, and 1-line version. Thank You to Stenstrom, Mcintosh, Colbert, Whicham & Partlow, P.A.I would like to offer a personal "thank you" to Sandy Ambrose for her expert legal service. The Stenstrom firm has served the College well for over 40 years. |
