Presidential Report May 11, 2009KudosThank you to Lisa Greer, Dede Schaffner, and Chick Gregg for attending Commencement. I think you will agree that our Commissioner of Education was definitely charged up - as were our graduates! And speaking of graduations, I hope that my speech last Saturday to UCF's graduating class, which included Lalita Booth, was as rousing! Lalita graduated with a perfect 4.0, one of only 3 straight A students at UCF, and she has garnered nearly $650,000 in scholarship offers. Amazing! For the fourth consecutive year, a Seminole Community College student has earned the honor of being named a Jack Kent Cooke Scholar. Sally Rodriguez, a single mother from Winter Springs, competed against 450 applicants to become one of only 30 JKC Scholars. She will receive $30,000/year to complete her bachelor's degree and $50,000/year for graduate studies. Sally has been accepted by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she will pursue her dream of a career in dentistry. Congratulations, Sally! I am pleased to report that our nursing graduates have outscored the national average in terms of their critical thinking skills. You have seen the chart which shows that the national norm is around 35%, and our graduates scored at the nearly 80% level. Impressive! And speaking of nursing, I would like to ask Dr. David Mealor to tell the Board what is in the works in terms of UCF offering both a Master's in Nursing and a Doctorate in Higher Education Leadership at our Altamonte Campus. Legislative UpdateMany thanks to Chairman Chris Dorworth, Don Payton and Scott Howat for their tireless efforts on behalf of SCC and all community colleges during the Legislative Session in Tallahassee. We are happy to have each of you back with us. I'd like to ask Chairman Dorworth to provide a Legislative Update. |
