Presidential Report April 20, 2009KudosDana Freyman, SCC’s first female student to pass the Florida general contractor licensing exam, recently passed the Green Building Certification Institute’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) professional accreditation exam. Dana is the first SCC student to become a LEED Accredited Professional. Dana is a former nurse from Longwood. Congratulations, Dana! Brandon Widener, a student in SCC’s Multimedia Technology Television and Film Production program was named one of two runners-up in the national Student Travel Association’s World Traveler Internship Contest. Brandon’s prize is a round-trip ticket to Europe where he will visit 5 countries on a Eurail pass. Congratulations, Brandon! On a personal note, I am pleased to report that I’ve been asked to join the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation Board, which is chaired by Dr. Matt Quinn, Executive Director of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. There are 11 Board members which include: a former US Ambassador; a Pulitzer prize-winning author; the head of the Coca-Cola Foundation; and a VP from USA Today. And next year, the PTK Convention will be headed to Orlando. So, there will be lots of opportunities for SCC students to be more involved. GraduationOur Graduation Ceremonies are scheduled for April 29, 30 and May 1. Our Commencement speaker on May 1 is the Commissioner of Education, Dr. Eric Smith. Also, UCF will be holding their Graduation Ceremony on May 9th at which time Lalita Booth will receive her degree. I asked Dr. Hitt if I could be the speaker at her Graduation and I am pleased to say that he agreed. Athletics UpdateSoftballThe Raiders Softball Team is 41-20 overall and ranked 4th in the state and 14th in the nation. They finished in Second Place in the Conference with an 18-6 record. Six players were named to the Mid-Florida First Team All Conference and one player was selected to the Second Team. They will play in the State Tournament on May 1st. Congratulations to Coach Courtney Miller, who got her 600th win this season! GolfGolfers Fabys Barreto, Rio Milord, Suzanne Ervin, and Eva Rogers will be representing SCC at the National Championship at LPGA International on May 18-21. The team is ranked 5th in the nation and Fabys Barreto is ranked 10th individually in the country. Congratulations to Coach Christa Teno and our students! BaseballOur Baseball team will conclude the season this week. A highlight for the year was a 9-game winning streak. So far, two of the men have signed scholarships to UCF and FSU. Congratulations to Coach Chris Hayes! Legislative UpdateAs you know, Don Payton, Chris Dorworth and Scott Howat are our resident-advisors and advocates in Tallahassee. While the budget discussion appears to be stalled, I would ask that Don and Scott provide us with their perspectives. Tomorrow, the Executive Team is holding an all-day meeting to prioritize 5%, 10% and 15% budget cut scenarios. While no one likes to think that we would have to contract our operation -- even as we are serving more students -- given the actions in Tallahassee, that may be a reality. Following our meeting tomorrow, we will be holding a series of forums around the College to solicit input from faculty and staff on the proposed budget cuts. On May 11, we will hold a budget workshop with the Board at 2 p.m., in advance of the 3:30 p.m. Board meeting, with the hope that we will have more definitive answers to the budget questions. Obviously, we hope to avoid any type of staff reduction; but some form of reorganization may be necessary given the anticipated severity of the budget cuts. Working in our favor is still the huge surge in enrollment. We are currently over 40% ahead of this time last year, but that should settle out. I pledge to keep the Board informed as we face the next few weeks and a very uncertain budget picture. |
