Presidential Report March 30, 2009

Many Thanks

Many thanks to our Board Chair, Chris Dorworth, for addressing the Leadership Academy folks who journeyed to Tallahassee on March 24-25 to see the legislative process firsthand! In addition to meeting with the Chancellor for the Florida College System, the group also met with key legislative leaders and attended one of Chris' committee meetings which dealt with an excess hours bill related to the university system.

Kudos

As the budget saga continues, I am pleased to report some good news. SCC's Small Business Development Center exceeded all of its federal goals for 2008, creating 147 new jobs and raising $3.2 million in capital formation. The SBDC helped owners examine their options, protect their cash and manage their businesses resulting in the retention of 133 jobs in Seminole County. Congratulations to Wayne Hardy and the SBDC staff!

In Tallahassee this week, the top Honors students will be honored. I am pleased to report that our own Trishelle Copeland-Johnson has been named Florida's TOP Honors student and will be the featured speaker at the luncheon this Thursday in Tallahassee. She will then be honored in Phoenix at the American Association of Community Colleges Convention, where she will be named both a New Century Scholar and a member of the USA Today First Academic Team. Be sure to get the April 6th issue of USA Today because Trishelle will be featured along with the other 49 top community college students in the nation. Trishelle is the first SCC student to receive this award. Congratulations, Trishelle, and all of the faculty and staff who have helped her!

During Spring break, twenty-eight students represented SCC at the Phi Beta Lambda Annual State Competition held in Tampa. They won 26 awards: 8 First Place , 6 Second Place, 9 Third Place, 1 Fourth Place, and 2 Fifth Place awards. Eighteen are now qualified to compete at the national conference in Los Angeles on June 20-24. Many thanks to Sherry Jenkins (Advisor), Jordan Camenker, Tom Walker, and Christine Wright who mentored the students and helped with various events during the conference. The students will be invited to the April Board meeting so you can congratulate them in person. Many congratulations to all!

Mercedes Bermejo, Director of Student Success Services at SCC's Heathrow Center, has been named an "Hispanic Woman Who Makes the Difference" by La Prensa newspaper. Mercedes was recognized in the education category for her accomplishments in higher learning and her contributions to the Hispanic community. Congratulations, Mercedes!

Professor Bobbie Bell directed the latest offering at Mad Cow Theatre, Joan Didion's "The Year of Magical Thinking." Congratulations, Bobbie!

Accreditation

I am pleased to report that SCC's Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic Program received continuing accreditation through 2014 by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Congratulations, to Norm Massicotte and his staff!

Athletics Update

The Lady Raider's Softball Team is now 32-13 overall. They recently completed a 24 game winning streak, setting a new SCC record. The wins included two against Santa Fe College, the #1 team in the nation. Coach Courtney Miller celebrated her 600th career win on March 7th . Congratulations to Courtney and the Lady Raiders!

The Men's and Women's Basketball Teams have also distinguished themselves. Five of the Lady Raiders made either the First Team, Second Team or Mid-Florida Conference and six of our men placed on the First Team, Second Team and Mid-Florida Conference.

And our Lady Raider Golf Team is ranked #5 in the nation. Congratulations to Coach Christa Teno and the Team!

Congratulations to all of our players and coaches!
