Presidential Report February 16, 2009

Many Thanks

Many thanks to our Trustees -- Chick Gregg, Dede Schaffner and Scott Howat – for traveling to Tallahassee for the FACC Trustee Legislative Workshop in early February. I know that the visits with selected Legislators will serve us well later. Lisa, we missed you and totally understand “child-shared” illnesses. Special thanks to Chick for the use of his plane now that Delta’s most direct route to Tallahassee is through Cincinnati.

Kudos

Mark Carey, Clinical Coordinator for the Respiratory Care Program, has been selected by the American Lung Association to receive their National Volunteer Excellence Award in San Diego in June. Congratulations, Mark!

During a recent compliance visit, the Department of Veterans Affairs reviewed the files of 43 student Veterans and found NO errors. They congratulated us “on the excellent condition of your VA records and the fine service being rendered to veterans by your VA Specialist, Tyrone Major, and the friendly staff in the Enrollment Services Department.” Congratulations and thanks to all!

Our Interior Design students were recently honored by the local chapter of the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA). Forty students were recognized for their competitive submissions. Four students received top honors: Kristin Sellers, First Place award valued at $3,000; Vicki Hessler, Second Place, $500 award; Rachel Miller and Heather Sozio, Third Place, $350 award; and Vicky Zajac, Honorable Mention. Congratulations to all!

Students from SCC’s Student Government Association attended the FJCSGA Conference, February 12-15, in St. Petersburg. Eighteen students represented SCC from our Altamonte, Oviedo and Sanford/Lake Mary Campuses. They did us proud!

At the District II level, SCC earned the following awards:

  • SGA Sanford/Lake Mary earned the District II Community Involvement Award. This award is given to the SGA in the district that excelled in community involvement.
  • SGA Altamonte Springs earned the District II Excellence Award. This award is given to the SGA that has demonstrated the most growth and increased presence at their respective campus.
  • Santiago Ossa (Altamonte Springs), was elected Assistant Coordinator for District II.

At the State level, SCC earned the following awards:

  • SGA Sanford/Lake Mary's video scrapbook was selected as the Best in State.
  • Mauricio Garcia, SGA Advisor, was recognized with the Vee Severs-Choate Advisors' Award. This award is given by the advisors to an advisor. Quite an honor!

Congratulations to all of our students, Mauricio Garcia, and Randy Pawlowski!

Media Coverage

We certainly have been getting some great media coverage lately…from the column written in The St. Petersburg Times by Bill Maxwell, a former community college faculty member, about Lalita Booth’s success to the front page article in the Orlando Sentinel about Lalita to the article on our automotive program. WOW!

SCC’s 25th Anniversary Dream Auction

The Dream Auction will be held on Saturday, February 21, at the Orlando Marriott in Lake Mary. I hope to see you there!

March Board Meeting

The March 16 Board meeting falls during Spring Break. Dr. McGee asked the Board to please check their calendars for an alternate date. The March meeting was moved to March 30 at 9:00 a.m.
