Presidential Report July 21, 2008

Thank You

Many thanks to Chris Dorworth, Dede Schaffner and Scott Howat for attending the Banner Center Kickoff this morning at the Center for Economic Development, featuring the Lt. Governor. I think you will agree that Jud French and our SCC team did a great job of promoting SCC. Also, I thought it was interesting to note that we have already received a match for the $500,000 invested by the State!

SCC-UCF University Partnership Center

As you can see, we are well under way with our University Partnership Center. It is truly amazing what can be accomplished in a week. To give Chris one more thing to adorn his office and cause him to discuss our future, I would like to present him with the same memento that Dr. Hitt received at the groundbreaking. Chris, we expect to see this in a prominent place in your legislative office!

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Dede Schaffner who received the "Woman of the Year" award during the Boys and Girls Club event on May 22. We are certainly proud of all that Dede has done for the youth of Seminole County.

Chamber Choice Award

SCC was recently named the region's "Economic Developer of the Year" by the Seminole County Regional Chamber of Commerce during the Chamber Choice 2008 Awards. This award is a testament to the exceptional relationship that SCC enjoys with our community and business partners. Congratulations to Dean Mike Staley and all who helped us to gain this recognition!

Grant Awards

Despite strong competition and the decrease in state funds, SCC was awarded $115,089, the full amount requested, for the Farmworker Jobs and Education Program. This award will allow us to continue the critical services that we provide through our Migrant Farmworker Program. Congratulations to Sheila Dixon, Suzi Ball and Dr. Angela Albert!

Also, SCC's College Reach-Out Program (CROP) has received full funding from the State in the amount of $45,122. Congratulations to Yolanda Williams and our CROP team!

Athletics Update

The Women's Basketball Team achieved a new milestone both on the court and in the classroom. They finished the season ranked 14th in the nation and now have been ranked 17th nationally with a combined team GPA of 3.11. The Women's Basketball Coaches Association publishes the Academic Top 20 list. It is definitely worth noting that our Lady Raiders are the only team in the nation that achieved the distinction of being ranked in the top 20 for athletics and academics. Many congratulations to Coach Maureen Smith and the Lady Raiders!

Also, we have just named a new baseball coach. Chris Hayes joins us from Jacksonville University, where he served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for five years. Chris has a bachelor's degree in finance and an MBA and will be only the fourth head baseball coach for SCC. Welcome, Chris!

Florida College System Task Force

And of course, I am thrilled to be named by the Commissioner of Education to the Florida College System Task Force. This group will begin meeting in September to make recommendations on the future organizational structure and mission for Florida's community colleges. The group will make its recommendation in tandem with the Pilot College recommendation, both of which will be sent to the Legislature for their final determination. These are exciting times for community colleges!
