Presidential Report May 6, 2008

Thank You!

Special thanks to Lisa Greer, Chick Gregg and Dede Schaffner for attending Commencement last Thursday. Mike Gaudreau, Principal of Seminole High School, was our guest speaker and "Outstanding Graduate." Approximately 1,000 students were eligible to graduate that evening, with more than 140 choosing to participate. Thursday night was the third of our Graduation evenings last week, following the GED and Adult High School events.

Endowed Teaching Chair Recipients

Congratulations to our new Endowed Teaching Chair recipients, Trent Tomengo (Humanities), who received the Wharton-Smith Chair; Nana Robertson (Child Development), who received the Ken Sylvester Chair; and Patti Yorty (Nursing), who received the Central Florida Regional Hospital Chair. The $5,000 cash award, provided by the SCC Foundation, is a tangible way to recognize teaching excellence.

Jack Kent Cooke Scholar

SCC had another student selected to receive the coveted Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship, our third in as many years. Sarah Holland, President of Phi Theta Kappa, learned of her $30,000 award during the Graduation dinner on May 1. Sarah is the first in her family to graduate from high school and was recently named to the All-Florida Academic First Team. Sarah graduated last week from SCC with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Congratulations to Sarah and to all who helped her achieve this honor!

Athletic Banquet

Special thanks to former Orlando Magic General Manager, John Gabriel, for speaking at SCC's Athletic Banquet on April 27, as well as to Scott Plakon and his daughter Jeanne for providing the entertainment. Jeanne Plakon is part of a select group of students from Lake Highland Preparatory who have had a song that they are performing accepted for competition as the official Olympic theme song.

Student Successes

SCC Interior Design student, Kristin Sellers, received the Meredith Lacy Award from the American Society of Interior Designers in Tallahassee in early April. Kristin also won first place awards in competition with students from Florida State University and the University of Florida. She received a $750 scholarship. Several other SCC students scored wins at the competition. SCC's Interior Design Program was also one of only seven schools awarded a "Most Outstanding Annual Requirements" trophy at the National Kitchen & Bath Association 2008 Conference in Chicago. Congratulations to the students, Jill Smith and our Interior Design faculty.

In early April, Phi Beta Lambda students competed at the PBL Annual State Leadership Conference and won 23 student awards and four chapter awards. In addition, SCC received the Gold Seal Chapter Award and Chapter of the Year. Congratulations to Sherry Jenkins, PBL Advisor, and our talented students! They will now compete at Nationals in Atlanta in June. Many thanks to the faculty who have helped our PBL students: Tom Walker, Terri Meta, Jordan Camenker, Gerald Geile and Victoria Ackerman.

Simona Bartkova, a member of the Lady Raiders Basketball Team, is the recipient of the 2008 Sandy Miller Scholar Athlete Award, presented by the Florida Community College Activities Association. Simona is a 19-year-old guard from Denmark. She has a 4.0 GPA and is the third SCC player to win this prestigious award. Congratulations, Simona!

Freshman LaQuita Curry was named an NJCAA First Team All-American; sophomore Jessica Knurick was named an NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American; and sophomore Men's Basketball player, Tyrone Curnell, was named an NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American.

Our Women's Fastpitch Softball Team made it to State last week but lost in extra innings. This Friday, our Men's Baseball Team will compete for the State Championship.

Jennie Long, a grandmother and former single mother who returned to SCC to earn a nursing degree, is the winner of the 2008 Houghton Mifflin Student Success Award. Jennie will receive a $1,000 scholarship and an all-expenses paid trip to the College Survival Conference in O'ahu, Hawaii. Jennie worked as a certified nursing assistant for more than 25 years and said that her dream was always to become a nurse. She wrote her award-winning essay while enrolled in our College Success course. She is the third SCC student to win this award since 2000.

SCC Women Golfers, Suzanne Ervin and Rio Milord, finished in the top 10 at the NJCAA Region VII Conference. The women have qualified for the NJCAA tournament in May. The Women's Golf Team is ranked fourth in the nation during their first season.
