Presidential Report April 15, 2008Student SuccessesFive SCC photography students will have their work published in the Best of College Photography Annual 2008. Ashley Burton, Hector Soto-Molina, Erin Elizabeth Ricci, William Wilson III, and Mitxel Foruria were selected as finalists by Photographer's Forum magazine. Lalita Booth has been selected as a 2008 Truman Scholar! There were 595 candidates nominated for the award with 65 selected. As you may have read, Lalita is the only Florida student to be selected for this very prestigious award which comes with a $30,000 annual scholarship. SCC Interior Design student, Bethany Lundmark, is the winner of the National Kitchen and Bath Association's GE Charette Competition which includes a $1,000 cash prize. Lundmark works at Home Depot as a kitchen designer. Trishelle Copeland-Johnson has been selected to participate in the Community College Institute program at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory this summer. This highly competitive program will allow her to spend 10 weeks performing research with some of the leading scientists in the world. The findings of her project, Production of Carbon Fibers from Renewable Resources, will be reported to the U.S. Department of Energy. Staff SuccessesDr. Angela Albert contributed a chapter to the book Understanding Minority-Serving Institutions, recently published by the State University of New York Press. The book has been described as a "much-needed contribution to the literature." Congratulations, Dr. Albert! Richard Weinblatt, an instructor in our Criminal Justice program, is now Dr. Weinblatt having graduated from Argosy University. Congratulations, Richard! Budget WorkshopThe Board Budget Workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, June 3, from 8:30 a.m. - noon. Baccalaureate Degree WorkshopAccording to current state procedure, SCC's letter of intent to apply for approval to the State to offer Bachelor's Degrees is due June 1. Therefore, we would like to schedule the B.A. Degree Workshop sometime in early May. We will be inviting Dr. David Mealor and Dr. David Harrison from UCF to join us for the discussion. Linda will be calling the Board to coordinate a time. President's Annual EvaluationAt your place is a copy of the evaluation materials related to the Annual Evaluation of the President. The Board was asked to complete this prior to our June Board meeting. As has been our practice, Linda will contact each Board member to schedule a private time for them to discuss their comments. GraduationsThe Board was asked to let Linda Cowels know which Graduation Ceremonies they plan to attend.
