Presidential Report January 15, 2008

Altamonte Springs Campus Opening!

The new Altamonte Springs Campus opened on Monday, Jan. 7, with enrollment numbers that definitely exceeded our expectations. Currently, we are at 129 percent of enrollment projections at Altamonte. Collegewide, we are experiencing a 12 percent enrollment increase. I'd like to ask Dr. James Henningsen to give us a more complete enrollment report.

An Employee Open House is scheduled at Altamonte on Wednesday, Jan. 23, from 2-4 p.m.

The Official Dedication Ceremony will be on Friday, Jan. 25, at 10 a.m. We are expecting the Governor to attend. Thank you, Lisa Greer! Also, Congressman Tom Feeney will be joining us.

At the Dedication, we are also going to honor Ron Fahs, who works for the Division of Community Colleges. Over the last 12 years, Ron has been SCC's faithful friend as we have improved SCC's ranking from dead last among the 28 community colleges in terms of square feet per FTE student. Ron is retiring this year and he will be missed!

Heritage Jubilee

Many thanks to Dr. Annye Refoe and the African American Cultural Forum for hosting the 2008 Heritage Jubilee which featured the Fisk University Jubilee Singers. We had more than 500 who attended the program last Friday. It was an amazing evening!

Automotive Re-Accreditation

All four of the College Credit Automotive Programs went through the NATEF re-accreditation and were approved with flying colors! This accreditation takes place every five years and is quite rigorous. Congratulations to Dean Angela Kersenbrock, Mark Davis and our Automotive faculty!

Great PR

I'd like to show the Board two exceptional media clips - Channel 2 and our student participating in "Share Your Christmas" and our energy savings feature on Channel 9. Also, Dean Michael Staley and Mary Alice McCord are cover people in this month's Success In Seminole cover. Great coverage for SCC!

Theater Grant

The Darden Foundation recently awarded SCC's Theatre Program a $25,000 grant. The gift is eligible for state match, will help expand access to the theatre program, and will fund the development of a "Friends Program" to increase community awareness. It will also allow us to enhance the theatre experience for the hearing impaired by underwriting two signed performances.

Automotive Scholarship Fund

In honor of AAA's October Car Care Month, the AAA National Office in Heathrow recently donated $2,200 to SCC's Automotive Department. The money was raised by AAA employees who donated $2 every Friday during the month of October, which allowed them to wear casual attire to work. The money will be used for scholarships for automotive students.

Athletic News

Our Women's Basketball Team is ranked No. 20 in the nation in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) poll. The Lady Raiders, 17-1, are also ranked No. 4 in Florida. SCC's Men's Basketball Team is ranked No. 8 in the state. If you want to see some court action, join us tomorrow night in the Gym at 6 p.m.

Student Success

Jon Baucom, a SCC student, is gaining valuable leadership experience by serving as the regional director of the Florida African American Student Association. Jon came to SCC after earning a scholarship from the College Reach Out Program (CROP) and is a graduate of Lake Mary High School. He will graduate from SCC in May with an Associate in Arts degree, and was elected last spring as director of Region III of the Florida African American Student Association, an area that includes nine colleges or universities in Central Florida. Jon is also president of SCC's African American Cultural Forum and served as the master of ceremonies of the 2008 Heritage Jubilee. Congratulations, Jon!

ACCT Governance Leadership Institute

The Association of Community College Trustees will conduct a two-day leadership institute for Trustees and CEOs in April and June. Fliers are at your place.

Joint Board Meeting with Seminole County Public Schools

On Tuesday, Feb. 12, we are scheduled for a Joint Meeting from 2:30-4:30 p.m. with the Seminole County Public Schools. Dr. Vogel and I will be designing the agenda for that meeting and I would like to invite you to submit topics. The meeting will take place at School Board Headquarters.

Legislative Update

Don Payton is in Tallahassee. But as I am sure you know, the budget news is not good. Since each of you have a different vantage point, I would like to invite you to update us on what you see ahead.

Farewell to Suzanne Tesinsky

After 35 years at SCC, Suzanne Tesinsky will be officially retiring on March 31. However, the end of this month represents her last on-campus work day. Suzanne has dedicated nearly her whole life to SCC and for that we are most grateful. Suzanne, would you like to address the Board? On behalf of all of us at the College, THANK YOU!
