Presidential Report December 19, 2006Legislative Delegation PresentationMany thanks to Chris Dorworth for doing an excellent job of presenting SCC's needs to our Legislative Delegation at the Open Hearing on December 11 at the Seminole County Commission Chambers. And many thanks to Dede Schaffner for joining us at that important meeting. GraduationsMany thanks to Verdell Horne for attending the GED Graduation last Thursday, where we awarded a diploma to 91 year-old Dorothy Millies. Thank you to Dede Schaffner, Dr. Charles English, and Verdell Horne for attending the Commencement Exercises last Friday evening. The Honorable Judge Donna McIntosh was our speaker at Commencement and received the Outstanding Graduate award. On December 15, we graduated our largest class -- 1,865 students -- with approximately 193 actually marching. Among those who walked was a young man who had survived abuse at the hands of his mother who burned him when he was only five. He will be continuing his education at UCF on a scholarship where he plans to become a math/science teacher. Driving Track DonationThe Seminole County Commission, at their meeting on December 12, voted to support our request for $200,000 to be used to complete the funding for Phase I of the Driving Track. We were joined in our request with support from Sheriff Don Eslinger and the local Police Chiefs. The County Commission requested some changes to the lease agreement for the Geneva property in exchange for their support. Joe Sarnovsky has been working with County Manager, Cindy Coto, to draft those changes. We will appear before a County Commission meeting in January with the expectation of getting the funds prior to January 31, so that they will be eligible for dollar-for-dollar match increasing the contribution to $400,000. When you see Sheriff Don Eslinger, please thank him for making personal visits to each of the County Commissioners on behalf of this project. Donor GiftIt is my distinct pleasure to announce that Wharton-Smith has agreed to donate $250,000 to the SCC Foundation in support of our Construction Trades Program. In addition, they have agreed to work with the Foundation to raise the full $1.5 million that is needed to expand these programs. Wharton-Smith's gift is eligible for State match and will increase to approximately $500,000. Please thank George Smith when you see him!
