Presidential Report October 17, 2006Thank You!Many thanks to the Trustees for nominating me for the Association of Community College Trustees' Marie Y. Martin Chief Executive Officer Award. As you know, Friday, October 13, was a night to be remembered! To be selected from among the 1,200 community college presidents in the United States is an unbelievable honor! Thank you for your constant support and encouragement!!! However, this award is not my award, it is Seminole Community College's. It belongs to all of us in recognition of all that we have accomplished these last ten years! Endowed Teaching ChairAnd, just after I told Matt Hodge that we needed to turn this award into "big bucks" for SCC; Bobby Mandell, a longtime business associate and dear friend of SCC called. He had seen the award announcement and is endowing a Teaching Chair - $60,000 - in my honor! WOW!! Congratulations!Dr. Angela Albert recently co-authored a chapter in a college textbook entitled "Understanding Minority Serving Institutions." The book, to be published by SUNY Press, focuses on the history of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and their impact on society. Congratulations, Angela! Congratulations, also, to Marcia Roman and Laura Ross - our two new SCC Doctors - for successfully defending their dissertations for the Doctorate of Education at the University of Central Florida. Congratulations, Marcia and Laura! Arts AliveSCC is proud to sponsor a table during Seminole County Public School's Arts Alive event on Saturday, October 28, at the Disney Contemporary Resort. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. Please let Linda know if you would like to attend. This is always an incredible showcase of talent!!!! And speaking of performance talent, Friday night, SCC will host the FAMU Concert Choir at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Concert Hall. FACC Trustee WorkshopThe FACC Trustee Workshop will be held on Thursday, November 2, in Tampa. Thank you to Charles, Verdell, Dede and Chris for attending this conference. Strategic HorizonSCC will be hosting the Fall meeting of the Strategic Horizon Colleges on November 5-7 in Altamonte Springs. We expect to have nearly 150 administrators and faculty from the 15 community colleges. The group will be spending Monday, November 6, in leadership sessions at The Disney Institute. Sponsored by the University of Michigan, SCC will have our 10 Strategic Horizon representatives plus our Leadership Academy participants in attendance. November Board MeetingJust a reminder that the November Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 14, at 7:00 p.m. Also, Representative Joe Pickens and other members of our local Legislative Delegation will be with us on November 14, from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., as we lay out our Legislative agenda.
