Presidential Report June 20, 2006

New Trustee

Welcome, Christopher Dorworth! Tonight is Chris' first Board meeting. We look forward to benefiting from his wisdom and business expertise during the next four (4) years. Chris, you will notice that you now have a SCC name badge, please wear it proudly! Also, Chris just received his MBA from Duke University.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Verdell Pugh Horne for being re-elected to the Association of Community College Trustees' (ACCT) Diversity Committee. Verdell was elected to serve another two-year term on behalf of the Southern Region. Verdell will also represent SCC at the ACCT 2006 Governance Leadership Institute, June 25-27, in Washington, DC. The two-day leadership institute is geared toward supporting the unique role of the Chair and the Executive Committee of the Board.

ACCT 2006 Community College Leadership Congress

Each Trustee should have received a notice from ACCT regarding the 2006 Community College Leadership Congress. The Congress will be held October 11-14, at the Orlando Marriott. Linda will remind you of the early registration deadline.

Faculty Accomplishments

SCC art professor, Pam Coffman, had a show open at the Comma Gallery in Orlando on Tuesday, June 13. Titled "Fabrications," the show features works of fabric collage/paintings based on images of dancers from U-Turn Dance. Congratulations, Pam!

Professor Frank Albritton is having two articles published: "Presentation Software and Visual Imagery: The Influence of Language and Culture on Interpretation of Abstract Symbols" in the August issue of the Journal of Language in International Business; and "Online Education and New Millennium Leaders: Applications of Academic Administrator's Guide to Exemplary Leadership" in Florida Educational Leadership. Congratulations, Frank!

Library Project Update

Yesterday, staff met with Seminole County staff regarding the library presentation that will be made on Tuesday, June 27, to the Seminole County Commission. We are receiving support from County staff, but the outcome of a potential vote on an award of $10 million to SCC from the County, to be matched by the State, is undetermined. Please convey to the Commissioners before next Tuesday that you support this project. I would encourage you to join us at 1:30 p.m., on June 27, in the Seminole County Chambers.

DBT Organizational Meeting

The Organizational meeting for the District Board of Trustees will be held at the July meeting. At that time, state guidelines provide that you elect officers and establish the date, time and location of Board meetings.
