Endowed Teaching Chair Recipients

t gives me great pleasure to announce the recipients of the 2006 Endowed Teaching Chair Awards. These $5,000 cash awards are made by the SCC Foundation based upon a preliminary review process conducted by a committee of SCC faculty. This year, over 50 faculty were nominated for these awards. The following four faculty were selected by the SCC Foundation and honored at Commencement in May.

  • Cheryl Cantwell, Mathematics
  • Dr. Carol Clayton, Physical Therapy Assisting
  • Dr. Michael Hoover, Social Science
  • William Weber, Automotive

SCC Retirees

Thirteen SCC retirees were honored on May 11 for their nearly 300 years of dedicated service to SCC. During the reception, the retirees spoke about their time at the College describing SCC as their "second family" and said that they will continue to be involved in College activities during their retirement.

2006 Chancellor Leadership Seminar

Deans Lisa Valentino and Christine Robinson were recently selected to participate in this year's Chancellor's Leadership Seminar. This seminar, hosted by Community College Chancellor David Armstrong, is designed to enhance their leadership skills and prepare them for a presidential or other leadership path. The Seminar is scheduled for June 13-15, in Ybor City.

Student Achievements

Congratulations to Honors student, Lalita Booth, recipient of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. This year, 676 community college students from across the nation applied for this honor. Lalita is one of only 38 Scholars who will receive up to $30,000/year to complete her baccalaureate degree. Congratulations, Lalita!

Four adult learners in the ABE/GED program have been published in My Journey: A Collection of Essays by Florida's Adult Learners. Ruby Payne, Yat Lin DeCicco, Donna Fiddlemon and Marnelle Delucien's works were selected for inclusion in the publication that debuted at Florida's Literacy Coalition Conference in St. Petersburg on May 4-5. Congratulations to the students and also to their writing instructor, Cindy Godby!

Faculty and Staff Accomplishments

Several SCC employees competed in the 2006 Danskin Women's Triathlon at Walt Disney World last Sunday.

Jessica Cook, Ruth Del Manzano, Susanne Huber, Shelley Ouellette, and Elisabeth Peters, from Community Relations and Marketing; Suzi Ball, Grants Development; and Courtney Miller, Athletics, trained together for five months. Also competing in the event were Psychology Professor Doreen Collins-McHugh and SCC Retiree Laurie Linsley.

The women-only triathlon is a fund-raiser for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and included swimming, biking and running...impressive!

Frank Bonjione was chosen as SCC's Adult Education representative on the Central Florida team that participated in the Partnership for a Competitive Workforce Initiative Institute in Los Angeles on May 1-2. The Partnership Institute was established to inform and support communities that are building comprehensive workforce and educational solutions to meet the needs of their regional economies.

Dr. Michael Hoover and Dr. Lisa Stokes have recently both been published and presented at national and international conferences. Congratulations Lisa and Michael on continuing to add to your impressive vita!

And just today, Dr. Matt Hodge has been named by the Orlando Business Journal as one of the "Forty Under Forty." In other words, Matt is not only young, but also will be recognized on June 16 as one of Central Florida's most successful and influential people under 40. Congratulations, Matt!

Athletics Update

Seminole Community College recently named Maureen Smith as Head Women's Basketball Coach. Smith will succeed Interim Head Coach Tara Gibson. Smith joins us with 11 years of coaching experience, including seven at Division I schools. She comes to SCC after nearly two years as recruiting coordinator and assistant women's basketball coach at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. Smith holds a Master's degree in Education from East Stroudsburg University. She received her bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Florida International University and her A.A. from Broward Community College. Welcome, Maureen!

Also, Bobby Washington, Interim Men's Basketball Coach, has been named as the Head Basketball Coach for the Raiders. Congratulations, Bobby!

SCC sophomore baseball shortstop, Adam Younger, was named the Florida Community College Activities Association's Player of the Week. Younger has signed a Letter-of-Intent to continue his education at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The Lady Raider's Softball Team posted an impressive record with a 37-23 season. They were 3rd in State Conference and made their 6th consecutive state tournament appearance. Two players made 1st Team All-Conference; two players made 2nd Team All-Conference; and six players made Honorable Mention All-Conference. Two players were also named to 2nd Team All-State.

In terms of their performance off the field, 22 student athletes (35 percent) received Academic All-Conference Honors with a GPA of 3.0 or higher for the year; 14 of the 22 received All-State Honors with a GPA of 3.3 or higher for the year. We will also have two players - one in softball and one in baseball -- listed by the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA) as Academic All-Americans with a GPA of 3.6 or higher. One of our baseball players, Hugh Flanagan, is being honored by the NJCAA as a Distinguished Academic All-American -- with a perfect 4.0! WOW!!!!

Legislative Update

SCC had what could probably be described as our BEST Legislative Session to date. I would like to thank all of you who lobbied hard for us - it obviously paid off - and I would like to publicly thank Don Payton, our legislative liaison, for all of his long days and nights in Tallahassee. Don will update you on the impact of the session on Seminole Community College.

Trustee, Sid Miller

I would like to introduce a guest who has joined us tonight, Martha Miller. Martha, as you know, is Sid Miller's wife and is here tonight to see Sid complete his distinguished "official" service to SCC. Sid, as you know, is this year's "Most Outstanding Trustee" for the entire State of Florida. And even though tonight may be his last official meeting, Sid's heart will always be with SCC.
