Presidential Report December 20, 2005

Good News!

SCC was voted Best Community College in Central Florida by readers of the Florida Monthly Magazine. WOW!!!

Congratulations to Beth Larson and the ESL Team! SCC College's ESL program was selected as one of six community colleges in the country - and the only school in Florida -  to participate in a national study analyzing successful English for Speakers of Other Languages programs. The study, which is sponsored by the Council for the Advancement of Adult Literacy focuses on exceptional best practices. Findings from the study will be published and made available to other ESOL programs throughout the nation.

The American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMAE) has recommended that SCC's Medical Assistant program be granted full accreditation by the Commission of Accreditation of Allied Health programs (CAAHEP). A big THANK YOU to Bill Clayton and Ann Mautner for their expertise which was instrumental to this accreditation. Congratulations to everyone in the Medical Assisting area and all who helped with this!

Our Physical Therapy Assistant graduates had a 100% pass rate on the national licensing exam. The national average 60%. Many congratulations to the students and faculty involved in the Physical Therapy Assisting program!

Faculty and Staff Accomplishments

Dorothy Lange completed the twelve-week Dale Carnegie Course in Effective Communications and Human Relations. She received the Dale Carnegie Highest Award for Achievement. This award is presented to the one person who, in the opinion of the class, best exemplifies the standards, qualities and principles on which the training is based. It represents the most prestigious award in the training. Congratulations, Dorothy!

Keemah Montgomery and Angela Jones also attended the Dale Carnegie training and received awards for outstanding performance. Congratulations, Keemah and Angela!

English Professor Karen Feldman received a letter of appreciation from Prentice Hall for her contribution to The Writer's World.

Math Professor Martha Goshaw participated in the Mathematics in the Sun Activity of the Florida Two-Year College Mathematics Association

Over 350 students and parents attended a "Meet and Greet" to learn more about CROP (College Reach Out Program).

Dianna Campbell, Director of Choral Music, was selected to be the Chairman of the Repertoire and Standards Community College Division for Florida ACDA (American Choral Directors Association).

The SCC Choirs was selected to perform in Disney's Candlelight Processional on Dec. 2nd and 8th.

The Individual Events Team of the SCC Forensics Society went to the 7th Annual STAR Speech Tournament during the weekend of November 12th. There were 15 schools present including community colleges from Florida, Texas, and Alabama. SCC students received six awards plus 3rd place in the Overall Small School Sweepstakes. This was SCC's first sweepstakes award.

Dr. Alex Dickison and Professor Sherry Savrda organized the Einstein Centennial Celebration event held at SCC in October. Nearly 300 people attended the event. Dr. Dickison was also one of three judges who selected the student who will represent Seminole County Public Schools in the Sunshine State Scholar Recognition Program for Mathematics and Science.

Dr. Michael Hoover has been selected as a 2006-2007 Scholar-in-Residence in Political Science at Jackson State University by the Fannie Lou Hamer National Institute on Citizenship and Democracy in Jackson, Mississippi.

Board Retreat

Just a reminder that we will hold a Board Retreat on February 13, from noon to 6 p.m. One of the topics will be the 10 Year Financial Plan.

Building Funds

As you know, we got great news from Tallahassee this week concerning additional PECO dollars that are being recommended to the Legislature for Seminole Community College. While Joe will give you the details, the number for 2006-2007 is in excess of $27 million...funds to complete Altamonte, Heathrow, the Driving Track, Burn Building, begin renovations on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus, and launch the Joint Use Facility. Amazing!!!

Graduations

Many thanks to each of you for participating in the recent Graduation events. It is always amazing to me what our students have to overcome just to be our students. Particularly impressive was the 50 year-old woman who spoke at the GED Graduation - a native American Indian who could barely read and write when she came to us five years ago and is now on her way to her AA degree. And then there was our own Larry Dale, who not only completed the Law Enforcement Program, but also graduated first in his class and dropped 25 pounds in the process. As the former chairman of our District Board of Trustees, Larry has a new respect for what we do at SCC and us for him!

Happy Holidays to All!!!!
