Presidential Report October 18, 2005

Seminole County Legislative Hearing

Many thanks to Verdell Pugh and Dede Schaffner for attending the Seminole County Legislative Hearing today.

Trustee Workshop

Thank you, Trustees, for going in full force to the FACC Trustee Workshop which will be held on Thursday, November 17, in Tampa.

Student Awards

As you heard earlier, the Scribe swept awards at the Florida Community College Press Association Banquet. Congratulations to Joe Hendricks, Maria Riley and all of our Scribe award winners and advisor, Betty Porter, for representing us so well!

SCC received several notable honors at the District II retreat for the Florida Junior Community College Student Government Association (FJCCSGA). Out of approximately 100 students, Mike Pallone, Sanford/Lake Mary Campus SGA, was nominated as a "stand-out" student leader and was recognized as one of the best by advisors from other schools. The SCC Leadership Institute was voted the BEST in the district. Oviedo SGA was proud to come away with the "Spirit Lamp" which signifies spirit, camaraderie and the Love of a Good Time.

The SCC Forensic Society recently attended the 7th Annual STAR speech tournament, held at Florida Community College. Fifteen community colleges and universities from Florida, Texas and Alabama competed. SCC, with a contingent of only three, had the smallest team competing. However, we managed to bring home six awards and 3rd Place in the Overall Small School Sweepstakes. Congratulations to students -- Carmen Rios, Virgil Hayes, and Bridget Perry. Congratulations and thanks, also, to advisor Laura Dickinson!

Hospital Donations

As I hope you read in the Orlando Sentinel and The Orlando Business Journal, we recently announced some outstanding gifts from our three local hospitals -- $250,000 each from Central Florida Regional Hospital, Orlando Regional Health Systems and Florida Hospital. These funds will be matched by the State bringing the total donation to our nursing endeavor at the new Altamonte Springs Campus to nearly $1.4 million.

Many thanks are offered to Dean Angela Kersenbrock and Nursing Department Head Ruth Corey for the role that they played in securing this donation - with an able assist from Matt Hodge.

In line with our hospital partnerships, I am pleased to announce that today, Dean Angela Kersenbrock was appointed to the Central Florida Regional Hospital Board, effective January 1, 2006. Congratulations, Angela!
