Presidential Report September 20, 2005

Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) Conference

My thanks to Verdell Pugh, Dr. Charles English and Sid Miller for attending the ACCT Conference in Seattle. The focus of the conference was on diversity and I thought that the sessions were excellent. Each of you may wish to comment on the experience.

The ACCT Legislative Summit will take place in Washington, DC, on February 5-8. Please let Linda know if you plan to attend.

Hurricane Katrina

You can be very proud of the response from our SCC faculty, staff and students to the hurricane relief efforts. Two of our students, Rita Grayson of our Lady Raider's basketball team, and Chris McKeon, a Paramedic student who works for the Lake Mary Fire Department, have families who were affected by Hurricane Katrina. Our efforts have been to assist not only Rita and Chris' families, but also to help through individual efforts, FACC-coordinated donations, SGA-sponsored assistance, Phi Theta Kappa fundraising, SCC Foundation coordinated fundraising and rescue/relief operations performed personally by our Fire Science and EMS faculty members.

Many thanks to all who have dedicated their time, talents and resources to helping those hurt by Katrina.

Faculty Achievements

Even though it is early in the year, we already have a number of faculty achievements to report:

  • Webb Harris' short story "The Damned" has been accepted for publication in Happy, a NYC-based literary magazine.
  • Shaindel Beers received an honorable mention in the Juniper Creek/Unnamed Writers competition.
  • Alex Dickison and Sherry Savrda were among the leaders of Introductory College Physics for the Twenty First Century Workshop held at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California, from June 23-25.
  • Michael Hoover presented a co-authored paper at the annual American Political Science Association meeting in September in Washington, D.C. Also, his paper entitled "The Great Society in Central Florida: Struggle Over Orange County's Community Action Program," 1966-1969, will appear in Selected Proceedings of the Florida Conference of Historians to be published in Spring 2006.
  • Marina Proskurina, adjunct Art Professor, received four Merit Awards for the Florida State Competition in the Art-Tech category held in Orlando this past August.
  • Dr. Patrick Fitzgerald produced Mad Cowboy, a biography of former rancher-turned-environmentalist, Howard Lyman. The premiere was September 15th at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.

Groundbreaking Ceremonies

Please mark your calendars: Heathrow Groundbreaking Ceremony -- October 26 at 9:30 a.m. Altamonte Groundbreaking Ceremony -- January 19, 2006, TBD.

New Faculty Luncheon

I had the pleasure today of hosting a luncheon for our new faculty which was also attended by the Faculty Senate President. Fourteen of the new faculty talked about their experiences at SCC and why they enjoy teaching here. It was interesting to note that of the fourteen, eleven had previously been adjunct professors at SCC.

Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE)

I am pleased to report that I have been elected to the Board of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). CASE's Board is chaired by Dr. Rita Bornstein and focuses on enhancing the effectiveness of development efforts - fundraising, alumni relations, and communications - in two and four-year colleges. It is a 30-member Board and I will be joining representatives from Harvard, the University of Virginia, the University of California at Los Angeles, Georgia Tech, Princeton, and Johns Hopkins. Of the 30 Board members, there are only three community college representatives and the only one community college president. CASE pays my expenses for Board attendance. This will be a great way to get even more active in the latest techniques in fundraising.

Community College Enrollment Update

Recent Department of Education reports indicate that the Florida Community College System has shown dramatic increases in minority enrollment and completion rates over the last five-year period. The good news for SCC is that we ended up with the highest rate of enrollment growth (+34.2%) and the second highest rate of growth in Associate of Arts completions (+61.6%).
