Presidential Report July 19, 2005Many ThanksMany thanks to Sid and Martha Miller for joining us for the College's 40th Birthday Celebration on June 30. And speaking of birthdays, tonight is our Chairman's birthday and his family is in attendance for the last meeting that he will chair. ReappointmentI am pleased to report that Dede Schaffner has been reappointed by the Governor to serve as a Trustee through May 31, 2009. Congratulations, Dede! Student AchievementsCongratulations to the Phi Beta Lambda students who participated in the National PBL Leadership Conference on June 30-July 1 at the Disney Dolphin Resort. Our students did very well considering they competed against students representing 34 states. Of the 14 students who competed, 9 of them placed in their events earning 11 awards. Faculty AchievementsDr. Lisa Stokes presented a paper entitled "Location, Location, Location: Li, Leung Liaisons, and the Loss of Localized Hong Kong Movies in a Global Context" at the centennial celebration of Chinese's cinema and the 2005 annual conference of the Asian Cinema Studies Society Conference held in Beijing and Shanghai. She also lectured at Capital Normal University in Beijing on "Changes in Hong Kong Cinema in the context of Globalization: from the Heyday of the 1980's and 90's to the Present." Last month, I told you that Michael Hoover had been awarded an NEH Fellowship. I am pleased to report that Professor Kenna Noone also received an NEH award to spend a month at George Washington University. Unfortunately, Kenna had an illness in her family and was unable to accept the award. But, we are proud to report on Kenna's award! Nurses NowIn 2003, SCC's division of career programs partnered with Workforce Central Florida (WCF) on a federal grant, Nurses Now. SCC was awarded $124,000 for student scholarships. The scholarships covered tuition/lab fees, books, and state licensing/ board exam fees (approximately $5000 for each RN student and $4300 for each LPN student). We recently graduated 17 students from these programs. There is a 100% placement rate for our nursing graduates with LPN's averaging $35,000 and RN's averaging $50,000. The partnership that we had with Workforce Central Florida, which was facilitated by Owen Wentworth, enabled us to decrease the financial strain on the students while increasing retention rates. Just another example of the great partnerships that we have with our community. Congratulations to Dean Angela Kersenbrock and our excellent nursing faculty. Jobs for Florida's Future GrantSCC was recently awarded a $560,000 grant by the Jobs for Florida's Future initiative. The funding will support enhancements for SCC's Nursing and Respiratory Therapy programs and the creation of a new Wireless Technologies and Programming Associate in Science degree program. Program AwardThe Automotive Program has been selected by the Automotive Industry Planning Council (AIPC) to represent Florida in national competition. This prestigious award recognizes enrollment and placement rates, as well as, the relationship with the automotive industry. Congratulations to Jim Cox and our automotive faculty on to Nationals! Orlando Theatre ProjectOrlando Theatre Project and SCC will present "Reflections: Generation to Generation" a performance by graduates of the Governor's Summer Theatre Institute 2005. Sixteen gifted high school students will perform original scripts by local playwrights based on interviews with members of The Foster Grandparent Program.
