Presidential Report June 21, 2005
As you could easily tell from the pictures and the student comments, the Salzburg Institute was a life changing opportunity for all of us. How often do community college students -- or any students -- have the opportunity to converse with a communications specialist from the United Nations, a Fulbright Fellow, and an international expert on Hitler and then visit Dachau. Yes, we all learned much about our role as a "global citizen." Many thanks to Laura Ross for all of her hard work to make sure that this was an exceptional trip for both the students and me; to our donors, Seth and Marie Bernstein and the SCC Foundation; and to the students for dedicating themselves to the experience.
This summer, we are sending three faculty to the Salzburg Institude: Marisabel Irazarry; Frank Albritton and Stephen Summers. The Institute is designed specifically for faculty and staff. It will be interesting to hear their reactions as they interact with approximately 70 community college personnel from all over the United States.
Strategic Horizon Colloquium Update
Last week, twelve (12) of us traveled to the University of Michigan for the next leg of our Strategic Horizon journey. I would like to ask Dr. Carol Hawkins to comment on this experience.
From my perspective, the speakers were ones who asked us to stretch outside our comfort zones in academia and deal with process issues, the challenges of change, and a host of other topics which signal that education is evolving at a furious pace. The underlying premise of the Strategic Horizon initiative is that each college employee needs to lead from where they are. It is my hope that we can extend last week's experience to others at the college in the hope that we will all dedicate ourselves to providing each student with the best educational experience possible.
SCC has received a Meritorious Award from the State of Florida's Department of Law Enforcement for attaining a perfect Trust Fund Audit for FY 2003-04. Congratulations to Curtis Hague, Dean Angela Kersenbrock and all those involved in our perfect Criminal Justice audit!
Marianna Ross, SCC Professor of Art, was selected as May's Artist of the Month by the Orlando Art Museum. Congratulations, Marianna!
Michael Hoover has been selected to participate in a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) workshop in July. The one-week seminar, entitled "From Freedom Summer to the Memphis Sanitation Workers' Strike", is co-hosted by the Fannie Lou Hamer National Institute on Citizenship and Democracy, Jackson State University, Rhodes College, and the National Civil Rights Museum. Congratulations, Michael!
We recently received the Florida Community Colleges Athletic Association's 2004-05 All-Academic Teams listings. SCC had nine (9) students who were selected for the All-Academic Team in Fast-Pitch Softball, five (5) students in Baseball, one student in Women's Basketball, one student in Student Government and one student in Publications. We had three students selected for the FCCAA Distinguished All-Academic Team: Joe Hendricks, Publications; Juan Ojeda, Baseball and Katie Brosky, Fast-Pitch Softball. Lastly, Joe Hendricks was selected as the only student with the highest GPA in the Publications arena. Congratulations to all!
District Board Of Trustees Organizational Meeting
Just a reminder that the election of officers will take place at the July 19 DBOT meeting.
SCC's 40th Birthday Celebration
On Thursday, June 30, we will be having our 40th Birthday Celebration in the Gym at 1:00 p.m. Rep. David Simmons, as Chief Sponsor of HB 9119, the Florida House Resolution, will be congratulating SCC on the occasion and will present the Resolution to our Board at 1:15 p.m. I would like to ask our Board Chairman, Sid Miller, to attend and invite any and all of our Board members to join us during this celebration. We also anticipate that Reps. Adams, Hays and Mealor will attend. This will be an informal event with cake and punch.
And many thanks to Verdell Pugh for encouraging us to number the pages in the Board packet. This month's packet is the inaugural attempt...with many thanks to Linda Cowels for accomplishing this task.
