Presidential Report June 21, 2005Salzburg InstituteAs you could easily tell from the pictures and the student comments, the Salzburg Institute was a life changing opportunity for all of us. How often do community college students -- or any students -- have the opportunity to converse with a communications specialist from the United Nations, a Fulbright Fellow, and an international expert on Hitler and then visit Dachau. Yes, we all learned much about our role as a "global citizen." Many thanks to Laura Ross for all of her hard work to make sure that this was an exceptional trip for both the students and me; to our donors, Seth and Marie Bernstein and the SCC Foundation; and to the students for dedicating themselves to the experience. This summer, we are sending three faculty to the Salzburg Institude: Marisabel Irazarry; Frank Albritton and Stephen Summers. The Institute is designed specifically for faculty and staff. It will be interesting to hear their reactions as they interact with approximately 70 community college personnel from all over the United States. Strategic Horizon Colloquium UpdateLast week, twelve (12) of us traveled to the University of Michigan for the next leg of our Strategic Horizon journey. I would like to ask Dr. Carol Hawkins to comment on this experience. From my perspective, the speakers were ones who asked us to stretch outside our comfort zones in academia and deal with process issues, the challenges of change, and a host of other topics which signal that education is evolving at a furious pace. The underlying premise of the Strategic Horizon initiative is that each college employee needs to lead from where they are. It is my hope that we can extend last week's experience to others at the college in the hope that we will all dedicate ourselves to providing each student with the best educational experience possible. Meritorious AwardSCC has received a Meritorious Award from the State of Florida's Department of Law Enforcement for attaining a perfect Trust Fund Audit for FY 2003-04.
