Presidential Report June 15, 2004
Executive Director of the SCC Foundation
As you all know, SCC has been very fortunate to have Dr. Pam Weber as the Executive Director of the Foundation. I have asked Pam to join us tonight so that we could recognize her good works and express our gratitude for her years of service. Pam's leadership has enabled the SCC Foundation to get on strong financial footing, increase the Foundation's assets from $1 M to over $8 M and raise the funds for two new physical facilities - Construction Trades and Automotive. Scholarships, Endowed Teaching Chairs, instructional equipment, buildings ...changed lives ...all will be part of Pam's legacy. Please join me in congratulating Pam for a job well done.
Oviedo Campus - Designation
Suzanne Tesinsky attended the State Board of Education meeting in Miami today and returned to report that the Oviedo Center has received formal state designation as a "campus"! Many thanks to Suzanne for making the trip to Miami and sitting through a lengthy discussion of K-12 school grades before action was taken on our application for campus status.
Thank you
Thanks to Ms. Dede Schaffner and Dr. Charles English for attending the Central Florida Auto Dealers Association Thank You Breakfast this morning. You each have a token of "thanks," a chocolate covered car at your seat.
ACCT Regional Conference
Many thanks to Mrs. Verdell Pugh for representing SCC by attending the ACCT Regional Conference in Baltimore on June 23-26.
Athlete Honors
The Athletic Department has reported that 17 student-athletes earned All Conference Academic Team status (GPA 3.0 with a minimum of 30 hours earned) and 11 earned All State Academic Team status (GPA 3.3 or higher for the year). Congratulations to our athletes -- and their coaches -- for success in the classroom and on the fields/courts. The Women's Softball Team led the way with 12 on the All-Conference and 8 on the All-State.
Cy-Fair Community College Visit
On June 1-3, we took a team of our faculty and staff who are involved in the planning for our new facilities to Cy-Fair Community College in Houston, TX. Cy-Fair has the distinction of being built from the ground up - at one time -- as a result of a significant bond issue. They spent several years studying best practices in community colleges across the nation and then constructed a multi-building community college that was impressive. We saw things that we liked and things that we didn't like. However, I think we all will agree that it was a good experience and that we gained tremendously from the research they had done. We will be partnering with Cy-Fair as we enter the Consortium for Community College Development, sponsored by the University of Michigan.
Council of Presidents and Board Chairs
On May 27, the Council of Presidents will hold a legislative debriefing meeting in Orlando for Trustee Chairs. Sid Miller will be representing our Board.
Special Board Meeting
Tonight you will receive drafts of the educational specifications and master site plans for the Altamonte and Heathrow facilities. Our proposal is to have a special Board Meeting on July 8 from 5-7 p.m. that would address these topics only.
