Presidential Report April 20, 2004

Newest Community College President

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Hank Hurley, the newest community college president in the nation. Dr. Hurley has accepted a position as president of Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College. Dr. Hurley will be leaving us June 1st to assume his new duties. We will be conducting a national search for his replacement.

Florida State Literacy Award

I am pleased to announce that Harriet Little was chosen as this year's recipient of the "Mary J. Brogan Leadership" award given by the Florida Literacy Coalition on May 6. Congratulations, Harriet!

Florida College Student of the Year

SCC students, Leslie Brown and Ayanna Beckles, have been chosen as two of the TOP 20 college students in the state. They were recognized on April 16 in Tallahassee by Florida Leader Magazine. This award recognizes students who are deeply committed to their studies, yet concerned about and involved in community service at their schools and in their communities. Leslie Brown placed in the top 7 and was the only community college student in the running for the top award.

Women's Basketball

Seminole Community College's Women's Basketball star Rosanna Davis has received the Florida Community College Activities Association Sandy Miller Scholar-Athlete Award. This award is presented to the female basketball player who combines athletic ability with community service and academic achievement. Rosanna was the team captain for Coach Lisa Nuxol this season and led the Raiders to a second place finish in the Mid-Florida Conference and a spot in the state tournament. She has achieved an overall GPA of 3.38, but earned a 3.89 GPA this past fall for 20 semester hours. Ms. Davis will graduate this spring and plans to continue her studies in Pre-Med/Dentistry.

African American Cultural Forum

Members of SCC's African American Cultural Forum attended this year's Florida African American Student Association Leadership Conference in Melbourne, Florida. The club won a trophy for the "best display table" which was a video presentation of the club's accomplishments this year. The club also won this award last year. In addition, the club's president, Nekeisha Brown, was elected Vice President of Programs for the Florida African American Student Association Board of Directors. Congratulations to our Forum and to their advisors Diana Dillon and Lillie Gibson for doing such a great job.

Presentations/Articles

Dr. Christopher Robbins has recently published an article entitled "'The Most Universal Villain I Ever Knew': Jonathan Swift and the Earl of Wharton," in Eighteenth Century Ireland.

Michael Hoover presented two papers: "Milked and Bilked: The Battle Over Regulating Florida's Dairy Industry in the 1950s" to the Florida Political Science Association in Gainesville and "$500 and a Case of Scotch: The 1947 Florida Legislative Bribery Scandal" at the Florida Conference of Historians in Lake City. Congratulations, Michael!

Nursing Kudos

SCC's Nursing Department is proud to announce the Board of Nursing results for last year's graduates.

PN 89.1% pass rate - State was 84.9% and national was 88.2%
AD 85.7% pass rate - State was 82.2% and national was 87%.

Congratulations to Laura Aromando, our nursing faculty, and our students for all their hard work.

Student Day 2004

All of the Florida Interior Design Schools were invited to attend "Student Day 2004," which was held at Seminole Community College. The event was co-sponsored by the two professional organizations -- ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) and IIDA (International Interior Design Association). The event provided the opportunity for students and professionals to interact and be exposed to current design issues. Schools competing were: Ringling School of Design, Florida State University, University of Florida, Miami-Dade Community College, Florida Community College, International Academy of Tampa and SCC. SCC students walked away with four of the prestigious scholarship awards!

Congratulations to Jill Smith, our Interior Design faculty, and our hard-working and creative students!

Brain Bowl State Tournament

Our SCC Brain Bowl Team didn't fare as well as we had hoped in the State tournament - something about a math deficit. However, one of our star players, Brenda Ruch, was the third highest scorer in the tournament - missing second place by only one question. Also, 3 members from this team, captain Shadia Khater, Brenda Ruch and Ben Brown will be returning next year. Bonnie Tensen, Brain Bowl Coach, reports that the tournament was a great experience for them. Congratulations to the students, Bonnie, and State Brain Bowl advisor, our own Lisa Valentino, for providing the students with this great experience!

Phi Beta Lambda State Competition

Well, our Phi Beta Lambda students, under the coaching of advisor Sherry Jenkins, have done it again. In state competition our students won 12 first places, 11 second places, 7 third places, 6 fourth places, and 7 fifth places. The first and second place winners will be representing SCC in national competition in Denver this July. As an aside, SCC students swept all five award categories in the Accounting area - a first!! And the top student in accounting was Jennifer Resh, an 11th grade dual enrollment student. Congratulations to all!

Legislative Update

Don Payton just called from Tallahassee to report that community colleges are about even with what the Governor had recommended. Over the weekend, the Community College System lost approximately $20 million in recurring funds which were transferred to the University System to cover their enrollment growth. However, the Legislature did put more non-recurring funds in our matching pot. The good news is that it will all be over in less than two weeks.

PeopleSoft

I would like to ask Carol Hawkins to update the Board on the implementation of PeopleSoft and the issues that we have faced this past week - which are getting resolved.

Thank You

Many thanks to Sid Miller for representing the Board at the Retirement Ceremony last week and to Dede Schaffner for attending the Student Leadership Banquet last Friday night.
