Presidential Report December 16, 2003

SACS Reaffirmation

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Donald Crump of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools called to inform us that our accreditation was re-affirmed for the next 10 years. Congratulations and thanks to Dr. Nelda Malm, Dr. Elaine Greenwood, and all who worked so hard to make this happen. What a great way to end the year!

Thank You

Thanks to Sid Miller, Dede Schaffner, Don Payton, Mauricio Garcia and our 12 students for attending the Seminole County Legislative Delegation hearing yesterday. SCC made the "pitch" that we are becoming famous for'10/28.

Thanks to Mr. Lee and Mr. Miller for accompanying me on our trips to the district offices of our legislative delegation. Today, Rick and I visited Representative Sandy Adams, who has just been elected Chair of the Seminole Delegation.

Also, many thanks to Sid Miller and Verdell Pugh for attending the GED graduation. It was a fabulous ceremony. And thanks to Ms. Pugh, Mrs. Schaffner, Dr. English and Mr. Miller for attending Commencement on Friday. Also, you need to know that the Law Enforcement Graduation Ceremony last night was incredibly moving. The phrase "launching lives" just seems to be so appropriate.

Phi Theta Kappa

Our Phi Theta Kappa Chapter attended the PTK Regional Convention in St. Petersburg and was awarded the "Distinguished Chapter Award" -- one of three awarded in the state - and was named a Five Star Chapter. Neda Keshani, one of our students, was also awarded the "Most Outstanding Member Award." Only one of these awards is given for the entire state. Neda was responsible for spearheading the SCC Day of Service commemorating September 11.

Award

Our Baseball Coach, Mike Nicholson, has been named the 2003 Diamond Sports Regional Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Coach Nicholson will be recognized at the American Baseball Coaches Association's Hall of Fame Banquet on January 3, 2004, in San Antonio. Congratulations, Mike!!

And speaking of baseball, last Friday was a red letter day. Follett presented last year's State Championship Baseball Team with their championship rings. The rings were designed by the same individual who does the Super Bowl rings and were spectacular. Follett both designed and paid for the rings that were presented to the team. Nineteen of the baseball players, plus their families, were here on Friday for the presentation. We hold the record for sending the most athletes to senior institutions last year - 15 of them -to schools like Auburn and the University of Florida.

2004 Community College Futures Assembly Bellwether Award

SCC's Construction Trades facility has been chosen as one of the top ten finalists for a Bellwether Award to be presented at the 2004 Community Colleges Futures Assembly in Orlando in February.

Business Of The Year

Last week, the Greater Oviedo Chamber of Commerce recognized Seminole Community College as the "BUSINESS OF THE YEAR" for Oviedo. Many congratulations to Dean Suzanne Teskinsky and her Team Oviedo!

Outstanding Alumni

Many of you may remember our 2003 Distinguished Alumni, Vallie Piloian. Vallie was just elected Secretary of the Executive Board for the American Association for Medical Transcription (AAMT). Congratulations, Vallie!

Upcoming Events

The Heritage Jubilee, sponsored by the African-American Cultural Forum, will be held on January 9, at 8 p.m., in the Fine Arts Concert Hall.
