Presidential Report November 19, 2003

Brain Bowl Champions!

I'm very pleased to report that SCC's Brain Bowl Team came in Second at Valencia's annual "Delta Burke" Tournament. We lost in the championship to our arch nemesis VCC, but the students were champions in every way. Congratulations and thanks to our Brain Bowl coach extra-ordinaire, Bonnie Tensen.

Career Programs Accreditation

The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) has awarded continuing accreditation to the Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic Program following a peer review. Congratulations to Dean Angela Kersenbrock, Rob Holborn and the faculty for this success.

SCC's GM-ASEP Automobile Technician Training program has received official ASE MASTER certification. This is the highest level of achievement recognized by the National Institute for Automotive Excellence (ASE). Many institutions strive for this certification, but only a small percentage actually achieve it. Congratulations to Dean Kersenbrock, Mike Griffin, Mark Davis and the automotive faculty.

FACC Awards

The efforts of our Community Relations and Marketing Team, along with Media Services, Athletics and Admissions, helped SCC to win three (3) Institutional Advancement Awards from FACC during the Annual Convention. We won in the following categories: Best Color Photograph (the couple currently on our SCC billboards), Best Audio/Visual Production (Admissions Orientation CD) and Best Sports Brochure/Magazine ( 2003 Baseball/Softball Media Guide). Congratulations to everyone involved!

SCC also brought home three (3) Membership Awards for the Greatest Numerical Increase of Members Over Previous Years, 50% or More of Employees as Members, and the Greatest % of Increase of Members over Previous Years. Linda Cowels has served as Membership Chair for the past two years and still enthusiastically encourages faculty and staff to enroll as FACC members - it is not too late to join our very active FACC Chapter!

Department Of Education Visit

The United States Department of Education Office of Vocational and Adult Education will visit our Adult Education and Literacy Department tomorrow. What we have heard is that they are making a "best practices" visit to educational institutions in Florida. Dean Elnora Gilchrist and her staff are definitely ready to show them why we have the BEST adult education program in the state.

Enrollment Update

According to Pamela Pelaez, Director of Recruitment and Admissions, the spring term recruitment and enrollment is going well. We are currently 8% ahead of last year in new applications and the conversion from applicant to enrolled student is nearly double that of last year.

Thank You

Thanks to the Board members who have agreed to visit the legislators at their district offices with Don Payton and me.

Donation

At the recent Excel Alternatives "phase out" dinner, former Trustee Russ Moncrief presented a $20,000 check to the SCC Foundation to be used for scholarships for at-risk students. With the match, and through Russ's generosity in denoting SCC as his charity, we should have $40,000 available for scholarships.

Presidents' Club

As you know, this morning we had approximately 100 people in attendance at the Presidents' Club breakfast. This is an exciting undertaking for us and I encourage you to re-join if you haven't already. Recently, Dr. Kay Delk, the faculty representative to the Foundation, held a reception at her home on a Sunday evening to help us recruit new Presidents' Club members. Thank you, Kay!

Holiday Concert

We have been having some incredible concerts this season and I hope that you have been able to attend. Thanks to the efforts of Dr. Burt Perinchief and his staff, we have had overflow crowds. The next concert promises to be extra-special as it will be the Holiday Gala Concert on Tuesday, December 2, at 7:30 p.m. If you plan to attend, please let Linda know so that seats can be reserved for you. At the last one, the president was without a seat and was in the lobby with the overflow group.

Graduations

It's that time of year again! GED will have its graduation ceremony on December 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Gym. This year, the platform guests, faculty and students will all wear caps and gowns.

The College and PSAV Commencement will take place on Friday, December 12 at 8:00 p.m. in the Gym. Please let Linda know if you plan on attending.

Outstanding Alumni Award

It gives me great pleasure to announce that one of our own, Colonel Frances Martin, will be honored by the American Association of Community Colleges as one of the nation's six Outstanding Alumni at the AACC Convention in Minneapolis in April. Colonel Martin was brought to our attention several years ago by one of our faculty members who had maintained contact with her. Colonel Martin had a distinguished career in the Air Force that ended with her serving as the Base Commander for Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. The first woman non-aviator to head this aviation base, she served there during and after September 11 and just retired. I believe this is the first SCC student to be so honored by AACC. Colonel Martin is in good company as George Lucas of STAR WARS fame will also be getting the Outstanding Alumni Award.
