Presidential Report September 9, 2003

Title III Grant

Well, I will start with GREAT news! As you know, SCC recently received a Title III Grant for "Strengthening Institutions." Its focus is student retention and faculty development...and it is for $1.8 million over 5 years! While we have tried for a Title III grant for many years, our timing could not have been better. This comes at absolutely the right time for this college.

Congratulations to Shirley Range and Dr. Annye Refoe for their hard work and phenomenal effort. Only 74 colleges throughout the USA received Title III grants. SCC's score from the US Department of Education's review team was 97 out of a possible 100! Our thanks also go to Congressman John Mica for his assistance with this grant.

Thank You

Thanks to Sid Miller, Dr. Charles English and Verdell Pugh for meeting with Commissioner Jim Horne and Chancellor David Armstrong during their visit to SCC on August 21. In addition to several hours of "informal" discussion, we also had the opportunity tour them through the Construction Trades facility and Automotive facility. David Armstrong then accompanied me to Oviedo and addressed the adjuncts at their dinner. (Comments from Trustees.)

County Commission Information Sessions

Don Payton and I are meeting individually with all of the County Commissioners. With only one more to go, I am pleased to report that their comments have been extremely positive in terms of what they see happening at SCC.

Thank You to Legislative Aides

Don Payton is coordinating a dinner and theater event to thank the Legislative aides for their support during the recent legislative sessions. Please mark your calendar for Thursday, October 2, 6:00 p.m., for dinner and and SCC's production of "You Can't Take It With You." (Pretty appropriate description for this last legislative session, wouldn't you say?)

Department Of Education Visit

The United States Department of Education Office of Vocational and Adult Education will visit our Adult Education and Literacy Department tomorrow. What we have heard is that they are making a "best practices" visit to educational institutions in Florida. Dean Elnora Gilchrist and her staff are definitely ready to show them why we have the BEST adult education program in the state.

Remembering September 11th

The students of our Phi Theta Kappa honor society are hosting a very meaningful way to commemorate the events of September 11. On September 12 and 13, students, faculty and staff will be taking part in an SCC Day of Service consisting of community service projects located throughout our community. From painting the Good Samaritan Home to volunteering at Westminster Care to pulling weeds at Lotus Park in Altamonte Springs (the project the prez selected), there is something for everyone to feel good about. If you are so inclined, please go to our website where you can register for the event of your choice.

Nature's Table

Nature's Table had its grand opening yesterday as the College's new "provider of delicacies."

ACCT Convention

Next week is the Association of Community College Trustees Annual Conference in Denver. I look forward to seeing Sid, Charles, Dede and Verdell on Wednesday evening at the opening reception.

Upcoming Events

October 2 - SCC is the sponsor for the Seminole/Lake Mary Chamber of Commerce meeting at 7:30 a.m. at the Marriott in Lake Mary.
October 21 - The Board dinner will be held at 6 p.m. and will feature the new faculty as your invited guests.
October 30 - Trustee meetings scheduled in conjunction with the Florida Association of Community Colleges (FACC) Convention scheduled for the Hyatt in Orlando.
