Presidential Report May 20, 2003Baseball As most of you are aware, the SCC Raiders earned a birth at the national baseball World Series to be played this week at Grand Junction, Colorado. This is the first baseball state championship in SCC's history! In addition to winning the State Championship, the players also brought home awards for: Most Valuable Player, Most Valuable Pitcher, and six were named to the All-Tournament Team. In addition, Mike Nicholson was named as the Coach-of-the-Year. Representative David Simmons has initiated a Resolution in the House of Representatives as a tribute to the Raiders. Ceremonies Many thanks to each of you for attending the various graduations this past month. I think you will agree that the ceremonies are moving and meaningful. I also would like to thank Dede Schaffner for attending the Central Florida Automotive Dealers Association Dinner on May 10. It was an opportunity to thank the CFADA for their $2.5 million support and encourage them to contact their legislators to secure the state matching funds. Meeting With The Governor Twenty of the twenty-eight community college presidents met with the Governor on May 9 at Valencia Community College to discuss legislative issues. The meeting was called at the request of the Governor. The media blitz by the community college presidents has gotten lots of attention throughout the state. We felt that the Governor truly understood the unfunded enrollment issue that community colleges are facing. He made a pledge to assist us with funding during the next session. Legislative Update By Tuesday night, we may know the status of funding in Tallahassee. The most recent question from the Senate has been how community colleges would absorb a cut in our funding. SCC's response was that, depending on the severity of the cut, the adjunct budget would be the most vulnerable and that the number of impacted students could be determined by figuring $1800/class/25 student average. Stay tuned! PeopleSoft The PeopleSoft implementation continues on schedule with a July 1 Go Live date for some of the systems. |
