FACC Trustee Legislative Workshop
The Trustee Legislative Workshop is scheduled for January 22 and 23 in Tallahassee. The "bus" will leave at 6:45 a.m. tomorrow morning from the Weldon Administration Building. Many thanks to each of you for attending and hosting a dinner, in conjunction with Lake-Sumter and Valencia Community Colleges, for our legislators tomorrow night. A folder with preliminary materials has been prepared for you and is located at your seat. You will have plenty of time in the van tomorrow to review the materials. However, I would like to ask Joe Sarnovsky to review the Governor's budget and how this relates to SCC in preparation for our trip tomorrow.
Meeting with Governor Jeb Bush
Last Tuesday, the Community College presidents met with the Governor to discuss our critical issues, funding, funding, and funding. He was most gracious, but not encouraging. Today, the Governor's budget was released and indicates that he has recommended a 1.8% increase in funding for community colleges. Please keep in mind that this is just the start of the session, and anything could happen.
National Science Foundation
The National Science Foundation iTec National Visiting Committee will be here on January 27-29. We will be hosting a dinner on Monday, January 27th , at the Marriott in Heathrow. If your schedules will permit, you are invited to join the team for a reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. This is being jointly hosted by Daytona Beach Community College and SCC. Please RSVP to Linda.
SACS
Dr. Tony Newberry, President of Jefferson Community College (KY), will be here on January 29th and 30th for the preliminary SACS visit. Dr. Nelda Malm and Dr. Elaine Greenwood have done a great job of getting us prepared for the visit by the Accrediting Team on March 9-12. Please mark your calendar for March 9th for dinner and March 12 in the morning for the exit interview.
Seminole County Growth Luncheon
I have been asked to speak at the Seminole County Growth Luncheon on Friday, January 24th. This luncheon is sponsored by the Orlando Business Journal and will be held at the Sanford-Lake Mary Marriott.
Zora Neale Hurston Festival
The Zora Neale Hurston Festival is being held Friday, January 24 and Saturday, January 25th . The Zora Neale Hurston Awards Gala is being held on Saturday, January 25th , at the Wyndham Orlando Resort. The College is one of the sponsors for this event.
Heritage Jubilee
I would like to thank Dr. Stephen Caldwell Wright, Annye Refoe, the Black Faculty and Staff and the African American Cultural Forum for sponsoring a great event on January 10. We honored Ms. Thelma Mike and Dr. Calvin Collins, Jr., for the impact they have had on our community, particularly in the area of services to the elderly. I would like to thank Dr. Charles English for attending that evening. It was a most inspirational event! Special thanks and recognition to Shirley Range for adding her incredible singing talents to the evening!
