Presidential Report September 23, 2002
Thank You
Many thanks to Dr. Charles English, Ms. Verdell Pugh and Mr. Sid Miller for attending the Association of Community College Trustees Convention in Philadelphia this past week.
Trustee Commission Workshop and Legislative Issues Conference
The conference will be held at the Holiday Inn Select at the Orlando International Airport, Thursday, September 26. So far, Dr. English has indicated that he will attend. The morning program is dedicated to those who are new trustees, with the afternoon dedicated to advocacy topics as we enter the next Legislative Session. Phil Handy, Chairman of the Florida Board of Education, is slated to address the group.
Florida Hospital Luncheon
You should have received an invitation to an October 3rd luncheon that will be co-hosted by SCC and Greater Construction in the SCC Board Room providing an introduction for Terry Owen from Florida Hospital to the community. This luncheon, paid for by Greater Construction, will enable us to host top business leaders on this campus and also thank Florida Hospital for their financial support for SCC. A similar invitation has been issued to Orlando Regional Hospital if they have a Board member who would like to co-host an event of this type on the campus.
Legislative Candidate Forum
FACC, SGA and Paul Hull are coordinating a Legislative Candidate Forum for our local legislators on Wednesday, October 16, from 6-8 p.m. in the Fine Arts Auditorium. Each participating candidate will have an opportunity to make a three-minute statement followed by a brief question and answer period with a student and FACC member panel. This is our first attempt at this type of forum and is part of our desire to be more politically active as a College.
SACS Accreditation
Dr. Anthony Newberry, president of Jefferson County Community College in Kentucky, will chair the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Reaffirmation Team that will visit SCC on March 9-12, 2003. I had a good discussion with Dr. Newberry last week and he is looking forward to his preliminary visit in January, followed by the visit by a 15-17 member team in March. We are in good shape for SACS, thanks to the efforts of so many of our college staff. The draft of the report is now available on the web for review. Congratulations to Dr. Nelda Malm and Dr. Elaine Greenwood for a job well done.
Burger King Ad
Some of you may have seen the most recent Burger King ad which reflects negatively on students who attend community colleges by indicating that they need Burger King because their earning potential may be less based on their education. Chancellor David Armstrong has filed a complaint with Burger King and they have pulled the ad.
Enrollment Update
Total College Credit is still seeing a 15.4% increase in FTE with a 12.8% increase in headcount, making us still one of the fastest growing community colleges in Florida.
Board Retreat
As we begin planning a November Board Retreat, I would ask that each of you email me topics that you would like to see included. Also, I would ask that Dr. English appoint a Board member to work with me in designing the Retreat. The President's Council and the Executive Staff will be having college visioning retreats in advance of the Board's so that we will have data to share with you in addition to topics that you select.
March Board Meeting
Due to Spring Break, I would like to ask the Board to approve moving the March meeting to March 25, which will immediately follow our SACS Accreditation Visit. Also, the Board needs to formally approve moving tonight's meeting to September 23.
