Presidential Report August 20, 2002

Thank You
Thanks to Dr. Charles English and Dede Schaffner for participating in our Welcome Back Ceremony today.

Welcome
Mr. Bill Hope is the new head of Safety and Security. He comes to us from New York with a background in both law enforcement and teaching experience in the criminal justice area.

Mr. Joe Sarnovsky is the new VP for Business and Administrative Services. Joe comes from Loraine County Community College in Ohio where he was the VP for Business and Treasurer for the college.

Congratulations
Congratulations to Elnora Gilchrist on her 30th anniversary with SCC!

Enrollment
We processed approximately 1800 students yesterday at registration and expect to be 10% or more ahead when registration closes. New student applications have increased by 15% with two-thirds of our students under 24 years of age. Our crew is working hard to get everyone situated for the new term.

Kudos
The College received an increase in our allocation of Florida Student Assistance Grant monies --$99,000 for full-time students and $113,000 for part-time students. This was accomplished, in part, due to the timely and accurate reporting of Linda Crankshaw. Rob ert Lynn, Director of Financial Aid, and his team are to be commended for a funding increase that our students can definitely use.

Pat Fizgerald was offered the opportunity to co-author a book with Michael Tobias about creating documentaries. Michael Wiese Productions is one of the largest and most-respected publishers in Hollywood and Wiese intends this book to be the definitive text on the creation of documentaries.

Pat is also working on a documentary project with I.D.E.A.S. at Disney to highlight the new community called Harmony. This will be shown on the Home and Garden Network.

Maureen Tremel's course, Introduction to Nursing Process for the Certified Paramedic, was recognized by WebCT as an Exemplary Course for 2002. Nationside, only eight courses were selected, with only three of them from community colleges. Congratulations, Maureen!

Legislative Strategy
The button that I am wearing is part of our new legislative strategy to drive home the point that community colleges need more funding. Those in Central Florida are particularly impacted due to our high growth. The 10/27 signifies that we are now 10th largest in size, but 27th in funding. Valencia is 28th in funding and only jumps ahead of SCC when you add in their student fees.

Last week at the Sanford Hob Knob, Dede Schaffner and college staff handed out these buttons and described to legislators and the public the crisis that we are facing. We have two more Hob Knobs coming up on August 21 from 6-8:30 at the Oviedo Mall and on August 29 from 4:30-7 p.m. at the Heathrow Marriott. I would encourage the Board to join us in "getting the word" out.

Also, we are going to encourage our people to get more active politically. Rick has agreed to host a fundraiser for Senator Posey and we are encouraging faculty, staff and students to both contribute and walk for candidates. We have realized that we need to start early educating our politicians and be there for them, so that they will be there for us.
