Presidential Report June 19, 2002

Thank You

Thank you to Charles English, Verdell Pugh, and Sid Miller for attending the Legislative Appreciation Reception that SCC sponsored in conjunction with Valencia Community College on Thursday, June 13, at Universal's City Jazz. We had Representatives Mealor, Gary Siplin, and Carey Baker in attendance, along with approximately 50 staff members from each of the other legislative delegation offices. I think they heard loudly that we are very pleased with our PECO allocation, but that we definitely need help with the operations dollars. We let them know that "We'll Be Back" next year.

Baseball Update

SCC College had 4 baseball players selected in the 2002 Major League Baseball draft. The students were drafted by the Atlanta Braves, San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays. Our athletic supporters tell me that we had more students drafted than UCF. Congratulations to Mike Nicholson for all that he has accomplished in just two short years.

Basketball Update

I am happy to announce that Lisa Nuxol has accepted the position of Head Coach for the Women's Basketball Team. Lisa comes to us from Stetson University where she was the Assistant Women's Basketball Coach. She will start on July 1st.

Vice President of Business and Administrative Services

Thanks to Patry English for chairing the wonderful "first" retirement party that was held for Christyne Hamilton last Saturday night at the Altamonte Hilton. I say "first," because we are fortunate that Chris will be with us until we find her replacement. Once that is done, we will host another daytime college wide party. Thanks to Dede and Charles for attending and representing the Board.

The search committee for Chris' replacement, which has been ably chaired by Jim Henningsen, has forwarded several names for consideration. We will be interviewing three finalists next Monday and Tuesday with the hopes of finding someone who can fill Chris' very big shoes! The finalists are from Ohio, North Carolina and Florida.

SCC Foundation Board Retreat

Last Friday and Saturday, the Foundation Board held their annual retreat, but it could really be termed more of an advance! They heard the good news that they have raised $6.5 million of the $10 million goal and wrestled with priorities for the remaining funds. They dealt with lists that had been advanced by the Deans and the VPs. Dede is your representative to that Board and she will be teaming up with Gerry Weldon to help us make our 100-member goal for the Presidents' Club.

Central Florida Auto Dealers Association

We are nearing the deadline for the $2.5 million that we are raising for a new automotive facility. With the great assistance of the Central Florida Auto Dealers Association, Barbara Miller and Pam Weber, I think that we will have good news to announce this summer. Then, it will be just a matter of working on the matching dollars from the state.

Kiwanis Club of Sanford

Members of the Kiwanis Club of Sanford will be here on Wednesday, June 19th at 8:00 am, to present the SCC Foundation with a check for $50,000 in memory of Dr. Earl Weldon. The scholarship will be named The Kiwanis Club of Sanford/Earl Weldon Memorial Scholarship.

Kudos

At last week's Council of Instructional Affairs meeting, Angela Kersenbrock was named Chair of the Occupational Education Standing Committee for the 2002-03 academic year. This group is very active statewide, and includes deans and other leaders of workforce-oriented programs from all 28 community colleges. Angela's appointment is especially timely for SCC given the state's emphasis on nursing, and the Council of President's priority of educating legislatures of the importance of funding workforce programs.

Association of Community College Trustees

Thank you to Verdell and Charles for attending the ACCT Conference last week in Las Vegas. They may wish to report to the Board on the conference. I attended Charles' session on Diversity Issues and he represented us well.

Postscript - At last night's Board meeting, the Board passed the budget which will be forwarded to Tallahassee by June 30. A recommendation concerning salary increases was held until we know the strength of our financial situation for 2001-2002 as well as preliminary enrollment figures for 2002-2003.
